Had an interesting conversation with senior daughter on the way to the traditional family visit yesterday. She asked what would be in my fantasy garage, and I started to recount the list of cars I'd love, but then started thinking (too much?) about it. The thing is, how many of them would I actually use enough to be worth having them? I don't tend to just go out for a drive for the sake of going out for a drive, my cars are always working for a living one way or another. So I found myself struggling to justify the idea of having more than a couple of cars, maybe what I need is shares in a joint fantasy garage instead so that we could jointly ensure the cars were all used properly!
But still... I haven't chosen Ferraris, Maseratis or anything like that because quite simply I can't picture myself in one. All of the others, I have owned or could picture myself in. Just about.
Triumph Toledo - purely nostalgic reasons - I had one as my first car, so inevitably I've a lot of affection for it.
Triumph Dolomite Sprint - classic sporting saloon of the 1970s, had a couple of them too.
Triumph Spitfire Mk III - the best of the Spitfires IMO.
Vauxhall Chevette HSR.
Lancia Stratos - glorious sight and sound. Realistically I could only ever picture myself in a replica
E-type Jaguar - no explanation necessary!
Reliant Scimitar (the first Matchbox model that I remember having was one of the and they have always fascinated me)
Peugeot 205GTi.
Alfasud - preferably the Sprint Ti 1.5 Green Cloverleaf (not that I'm being picky).
Rover SD1 V8.
Mini 1275GT.
Honda VFR750 (the last one before they made the 800)
Triumph Daytona 650
Kawasaki ZX-9R
I'd also need something a bit less esoteric to use when I just need to go somewhere and not worry too much about how I do it - my old Pug 405 estate (n/a diesel, it didn't accelerate so much as acquire speed by stealth) was a fabulous daily car, it died at 275k and I felt almost as if I'd lost my dog.
In ten minutes I'll probably have thought of something else that should join the fleet, but it's a bit like your favourite song - it changes from time to time depending what you're up to and what mood you're in...
So what about yours?
