So this is my first non-motorised project. I bought 3 of these ATC wheels off of Gumtree for a bargain price a few years ago and they have been in the way without a project to go on ever since. had there been a forth, I'd have put them on a ride on monster mower by now. So the plan is to use the following:[img src=" i307.photobucket.com/albums/nn308/jonnyappleby1/20161219_111453.jpg" src="http ![](http://i307.photobucket.com/albums/nn308/jonnyappleby1/20161219_111453.jpg) " alt=" "] My wife's old mountain bike. ![](http://i307.photobucket.com/albums/nn308/jonnyappleby1/20161219_152047.jpg) ![]()

CTRL, Alt, Delete to bring up task manager and see what's hogging your cpu, memory or disk. If you don't recognise the program google search will tell you about it and if it is malicious or not, kill the process if it isnt needed and / or find and delete it if it is malware etc.
I like these bike projects btw...

Thanks for the advice. Reset my laptop. Faster, but not as it should be. 6 1/2 year old laptop! Anyway here's the wheels and donor bike. [img src=" i307.photobucket.com/albums/nn308/jonnyappleby1/20161219_152738.jpg" src="http:/ " alt=" "] I'm planning on just using the necessary components from this and cobbling together the frame out of this old trampoline frame a workmate gave me and I've had sitting about for years. I plan on making the whole thing out of stuff I already have. ![](http://i307.photobucket.com/albums/nn308/jonnyappleby1/20161219_152019.jpg) So first part of the build involved going through some of my 'drawers o' wibblepoo' for bearings, possible axles etc. My mate salvaged heaps of toothed belt drives, cogs and pillow block bearings etc. Very expensive to buy this sort of thing new! I also have a bottle of 'thinking juice'! ![](http://i307.photobucket.com/albums/nn308/jonnyappleby1/20161219_164300.jpg) So, as this is a completly made up as I go along project, I'm going to start from the back wheel forwards as this obviously makes the most sense? The wheels have no hubs, so first job is to create a method of mounting them onto an axle. In my spare metal pile I had some of these bits of 6mm plate. So going to drill a hole, pop a heavy steel tube through, weld and turn down. I think I'm best off letting the photos do the talking. ![](http://i307.photobucket.com/albums/nn308/jonnyappleby1/20161219_164308.jpg) Drilling the hole larger in stages. I don't think draper had a 25mm blacksmiths drill in mind whe they designed my drill! ![](http://i307.photobucket.com/albums/nn308/jonnyappleby1/20161219_165820.jpg) So the steel square slides over the tube which I've turned down a little, creating a handy step to stop the square in place. ![](http://i307.photobucket.com/albums/nn308/jonnyappleby1/20161219_181951.jpg) So this is the hub plate welded to the tube. It's being machined into a circle ![](http://i307.photobucket.com/albums/nn308/jonnyappleby1/20161220_170522.jpg)

So I stopped the lathe for a pic. gives a better idea of what I'm doing. ![](http://i307.photobucket.com/albums/nn308/jonnyappleby1/20161220_170537.jpg) Got a bit bored of turning it down! Trimming off the corners on the band saw. As far as I got today. ![](http://i307.photobucket.com/albums/nn308/jonnyappleby1/20161220_171821.jpg)

So, bit more progress today; Finished machining my rear hub/axle ![](http://i307.photobucket.com/albums/nn308/jonnyappleby1/Mobile%20Uploads/20161222_155647.jpg) Actually finished here ![](http://i307.photobucket.com/albums/nn308/jonnyappleby1/Mobile%20Uploads/20161222_161745.jpg) I'm not removing the rust from the rusty tube as this is going to be rat look through and through. I will be inviting more rust to join the party. Any shiney bits will be banished. Hub/axle in rim ![](http://i307.photobucket.com/albums/nn308/jonnyappleby1/Mobile%20Uploads/20161222_161833.jpg) The battery ran out on my phone so I couldn't get a pic of me drilling the wheel bolt holes. I'll leave that to your imaginations. It was great. ![](http://i307.photobucket.com/albums/nn308/jonnyappleby1/Mobile%20Uploads/20161222_171222.jpg) So here is the axle in place with a pillow block bearing and a pretty natty ratchet toothed belt sprocket/pulley. This was in the bits my mate rescued from a skip. ex hands on display in a museum. Should make a more unusual freewheel. I honestly can't think of whenever else I might use it. There was also a belt which looks about the right length, which was a major factor in this decision. ![](http://i307.photobucket.com/albums/nn308/jonnyappleby1/Mobile%20Uploads/20161222_171239.jpg) I'm fixing the gearbox on my Skoda truck tomorrow and giving it a bit of a service, so unless I can convince the missus that the most festive thing I can do on xmas eve is to create my chunky tyred rat bike, prob no more updates until after xmas. Have a goodun.

Mini lunchtime update. So I've made a start on the frame. Cleaned up the rear fork tubes. The tube is galvanised which isn't too safe to weld and it wont rust very well! ![](http://i307.photobucket.com/albums/nn308/jonnyappleby1/20161228_131931.jpg) Little slice of box section to form a flat for the bearing. ![](http://i307.photobucket.com/albums/nn308/jonnyappleby1/20161228_132046.jpg) ![](http://i307.photobucket.com/albums/nn308/jonnyappleby1/20161228_134213.jpg) I'm off back to the shed to carry on creating!

keep it as light as you can to make it usable if that is the intention.

I think it's already way too late for that! I have pretty much finished the rear forks now, photo to follow. The rear forks and wheel probably weigh the same as my whole Marin mountain bike! TBH it's far more of a show bike than a properly usable bike. I don't plan on taking it further than the local pub which is about 1 1/2 miles away. I'll upload the latest photo in the morning.

Interesting looking project, I'd be tempted to make a trike with them wheels though, will be watching.....

I think I'd probably made better use of 3 wheels by making a trike. I guess I decided on a two wheeler as I've seen lots of home meade trikes at shows but very few two wheelers. The third wheel and tyre may well either end up on my wheel barrow to create a 'monster wheelbarrow' Or it may be sold. Dunno yet. So had a few creation sessions on the bike. I got this far... ![](http://i307.photobucket.com/albums/nn308/jonnyappleby1/20161228_190115.jpg) and then found out that the tooth pitch on the freewheel cog and the smaller front one were different. ![](http://www.wired.com/images_blogs/underwire/2009/11/fox_60.jpg) . I have since changed this, bored out one of the smaller cogs to 20mm and will be using them. The freewheel now goes on the jackshaft. ![](http://i307.photobucket.com/albums/nn308/jonnyappleby1/20170101_172643.jpg) ![](http://i307.photobucket.com/albums/nn308/jonnyappleby1/20170101_172655.jpg) Luckily (For me!)my Dad is a massive hoarder and has a daft amount of bike spares in his garage. So I took the hub off a buckled wheel, binned all the ball bearings and have made up some spacers to fit where the balls were. This will be solidly attached to the jack shaft. I hope to use grubs screws, I recon these'll hold as there wont be huge amounts of torque going through anything. ![](http://i307.photobucket.com/albums/nn308/jonnyappleby1/20170102_125934.jpg) ![](http://i307.photobucket.com/albums/nn308/jonnyappleby1/20170102_152944.jpg) ![](http://i307.photobucket.com/albums/nn308/jonnyappleby1/20170102_152952.jpg) Pressed these into place. These'll hopefully be chunky enough to drill and tap. Making it up as I go along innit! ![](http://i307.photobucket.com/albums/nn308/jonnyappleby1/20170102_153523.jpg) This is pretty much where I'm up to. I've tacked a bit of box on the back to hold the forks in position whilst I cut/notch the tubes to fit. Anyone got any tips on notching tubes? Are there any paper templates available online I can print out and cut to? I did this one by trial and error and it took a while. ![](http://i307.photobucket.com/albums/nn308/jonnyappleby1/20170102_170616.jpg) ![](http://i307.photobucket.com/albums/nn308/jonnyappleby1/20170102_170630.jpg) That's probably it until next weekend now folks. Hope you are enjoying my thread. Any feedback appreciated.

Pushbikes handle fair amounts of torque - the riders full weight on the length of a pedal!

This tip's no good as it looks like you've already cut the tube to length but using a hole saw the same size as the tube gives a good fishmouth.
