So, I'm in the process of setting up a business breaking cars. I've sorted out the premises, all permits are applied for etc, now I just need to settle on what cars to specialise in, which is where your help might come in.
I've done breaking on the side before, but only really did it half arsed as wouldn't get the legal licences I would need at the current site. Previously I found Saabs particularly good, but only really did early 9-3 and 9-5 aeros. I've considered doing Saabs again, but with later ones too, and maybe including Volvo. Jaguar, Land Rover and Mercedes are thoughts too.
Am I missing anything, or do any of you knowledgeable bunch have any beauties Ive not considered? I'll be sinking a fair chunk of cash into this, so am just trying to get it right. The more input from different people the better!
Cheers, and fire away.....

Think about selling complete written off cars to europe ( Holland ) You do not have the hassle of dismantling and we can use 93% of the parts of your cars. The cars in England are so much more cheaper than ours. There has to be a marked for them. especially higher specd cars like tuned mercedes and bigger audiĆ

I think Saabs will only get you so far as they're 90% Vauxhall, though with the supply of specific parts being minimal, if you have the space to do it additionally.
There's plenty doing landrover but there are lots around.

It`d be good to get your input too, so I`ll no doubt PM you over the next couple of days if that OK.

The tough bit is, deciding what to specialise in, as I think to do it right, with a smaller site than a huge scrap yard, you need to do it this way. Thhere are plenty of Land Rovers about, although parts don`tvreally fetch good money unless they`re Defender bits. Combining Jaguar and Land Rover was a consideration though, as they`re linked to a cerain degree. Cheers for the input.

maybe not specialising is the way to go, and if there's workshop space maybe fit the parts too?
if you know ford well then you would do well with jag landrover and volvo, peugeot citroen as well to an extent as they ahare the diesels across all the mentioned marques.
the parts may not interchange in many instances but you'll quickly learn the way they go about building them.

Have a look at Porsches, dealer prices for parts can be really high.

What about MX5's you can pick them up for next to nothing. And there must be plenty of parts that can be sold off to a thriving MX5 community.

dare I say it but fiat x1/9s are worth considerably more when broken up than as a whole car, body pannels especially. a knackered car costs about 500 quid atm, and so does a pair of decent doors. Also with the xie, things like the door handles arer shred with the lancia stratos and a frrari too i think, so they can acheive silly money.

Cheers for the input guys.
Porsche is something I didn't think about. I've done a 944 2.7 in the past, and that broke very well. Suppose my only concerns are financial! I'm guessing it's pretty much be stuck with 944/924 as everything else would be crazy money to buy still, even as a CAT B.
MX5's are something I've never really gone anywhere near. Mainly because from what I've seen, there's no particularly valuable bits on then at all, unless you're lucky to get one with a hardtop. Suppose a plus point would be quite a few are modified now, and these parts always sell well.
The Fiat X1/9 suggestion is an interesting one! Ive owned then before, and heard people talk about how good they ate to break and their relationship with Lancia and Ferrari. Definitely worth looking into more!
I'm pretty much open to anything at the moment. The new unit won't be ready for me until about March, so gives me plenty of time to test the water. Ask I know is I need to specialise in something, whether that's one car, a country..... Anything. It makes it so much easier when breaking, toy get to learn more about what does and doesn't sell and it's far easier to store posts.
Keep the ideas coming cheers.

Have you considered breaking American cars? I broke up a couple of Mustangs a few years back and sold the parts very quickly, i sold the engines for more than i was paying for the complete cars!

Find the largest owners club without a prominent breaker on the forum , use it as your platform and use that marque , might have to pay the forum to advertise but you've got a captive market , be friendly , always available (to a degree) and you'll thrive. Two of my friends did exactly that , one on classic BMW's and the other on nissan 200sx's/skylines , and are doing well.

How about later vw vans? Lots of demand and plenty of newer ones around, there is scene tax on them, but that also applies to the parts you are selling. There's an example on eBay right now m.ebay.co.uk/itm/182378043891Ttfn Glenn

I can imagine parts are quite good on old American stuff......what puts me off though is the fact I know nothing at all about them! Suppose there`s always one way to learn....get stuck into one.

MGF ? In fact all "modern" Rovers (25, 45, 75, 100) as limited new parts available since company ceased.

Hondas are broken a lot but get good money. Largely as a lot of parts are interchangeable between various models.
Probably always room for more breakers since there's a big scene out there

Suppose there`s always one way to learn....get stuck into one. once you get into them you soon realise just how much is shared and how common a lot of parts are, yet also how specific to years some stuff like trim and body parts can be, especially older stuff, of late just being the big 3 with worldwide platform sharing coming across into European market stuff it starts blending into world cars.

can make money on anything these days just depends what you would consider worth it
cheap mk4 escorts are breaking quite well, with the price of decent condition dashboards and repair panels now. a decent roof off a cabby will sell for 100-200 quid on its own.
