Thought this might be a good idea for a thread? Some hints and tips for keeping your retro-ride running through the winter. I'll start: A thin layer of vaseline smeared on door seals stops them freezing to the car and getting wrecked as you try to pull the door open

Block heater anyone? Or do you guys need them? Fortunately it never really gets that cold here - although with the crazy weather we have these days, who knows? A good blast of WaxOyl under the car should stop all that nasty salt doing damage. And one thing not to do - using hot water to de-ice the windscreen. It can smash it . Bit of a no-brainer that one, but I've seen it happen!

Use luke warm water out of the tap - not hot water Done it for years with no probs - unless I`m in the Focus with its heated front screen

even cold water from the tap will do it if you arn't driving far otherwise it will freeze again. but i always try water before deicer because that does the seals and blades up and put a sheet over the window. yeah always use a high gear NO throttle round corners in RWD and same with brakes, you will just lose it

Great tip with the vaseline. I could have done with that this morning! Frosts do a dashtop ceramic 12V heater. That might be handy to warm the inside up. Someone does a mains water heater that warms up the engine for you!

What's peoples opinions on warming the engine up (i.e.: leaving it idling on the driveway). I've never done it myself as a) it's a bloody waste of petrol, and b) the engine may be warm but the transmission will still be cold, and this can cause damage. There was an old statement from Mercedes notifying owners of this years ago. They recommended that the car is driven soon after starting, but keep the revs low. That way everything warms up at the same time.

you shouldnt leave your car running to warm up, as soon as you start it you should drive it. when could at idle the oil is thicker and with the low engine speed will not form a film around the bearings and cam causing metal on metal contact which is bad, very bad. the best thing to do is warm it up at 2000 to 2500 rpm and when driving it don't bog it down in say 5th but don't rev it more than 3500rpm or so.

Fortunately it never really gets that cold here Easy for you to say, you're in England, it is that cold here, the warmest it was in Greenock today was about -2 degrees at noon when the sun was shining. It was no doubt a good bit colder in the morning. And with the wind today it felt worse. Still no snow oddly enough, it was dry as a bone. It's snowing up north though. One bit of advice for successful driving in winter... BUY A REAR ENGINED CAR! ;D ;D ;D ;D (and use tonnes and tonnes of antifreeze!! ) Also remember if you have a starter handle for your classic, even if it rarely needs it, then keep it handy, it might refuse to start.
