Anyone got or used one. Looking for a engine hoist to use while swapping engines in my fiestas.
Don't want to spend hundreds but there are several for about £100 on eBay. Are they any good?

the main issue is you always need to use it at fell stretch, if fishing an engine out of your average front wheel drive retro. and this where the hoist is rated its least (due to laws of leverage) and this is reflected in the prices

Got a two tonne Draper one myself. I think it was about £250 of ebay. Works fine for me and i've been lifting Land Rover TDI lumps with it and they aren't that light. Max jib length is only rated to 500kg though. Normally use mine at the 1000kg slot

I bought a hawk tools version, the black one for a hundred delivered, considering it weighed about 75 kilogram it can't have been cheap to courier. Used it to change a caddy engine and it's been fine seems decent enough. Only thing that can go wrong with it is the ram and there cheapish and easy to change. Thought I might as well buy one as to rent one locally was £50 a pop. Most of those on eBay look the same, maybe different colour or brand, but I bet they are all made in same factory in China.

using it at full reach for most people isn't an issue, I doubt many cars have an engine and box combination that'll trouble the rated weights if the crane will actually reach.

Thanks for the input guys, I am well aware of the rating of hoists at different reaches as I am an engineer at a mechanical handling company, but thanks for making sure I don't slip up. I can't imagine many engines and boxes are close to 500kg or even the 250 of the smaller hoists.
I am more interested in the quality, but like people have said. i'm sure they are all built in the same factory (the cheap ones anyway) so should be pretty similar.
Although I have been kindly offered one to borrow for a period of time from a local member which is very kind of them.
Cheers Matt

That looks identical to my Draper branded one which as I said earlier is fantastic.

got the same was as pictures above, again not draper or automec 9although I have one of there 2 post lifts which is great), so probably all made as mentioned before in the same factory. Never had an issue with rover v8's down to mini engines. its a great bit of kit and comes in handy for other stuff too.

What iI really want is a hoist that works on rougher surfaces. I quite often find myself having to hoist on compacted shale farmyards the little castors dig in and make the hoist a pig to move. I wonder if any are made with bigger wheels or a wide roller on the back which is less likely to dig in

I can't imagine many engines and boxes are close to 500kg or even the 250 of the smaller hoists land rover 2.25 engine is 200 kilos on its own... (4 cylinder iron head pushrod engine of typical 60s layout) thats the reason i paid a bit extra for a 2 tonne, plus i think the jib was a bit longer, which is useful for rear drive which tend to be at the back of the bay

I too have one that looks the same as above, had it for about 10 years now, it'll lift the front of the Triumph complete with drivetrain on full extension and still works fine.
As above, only fault is it's hard to move on a less than smooth floor.

I have a large, heavy duty engine hoist for sale. It's non-collapsible, and has been used for moving large v8 engines about. I'm losing my storage, so I will let it go for 100 quid. Must be collected from West Sussex though...

For the money, you can't knock a Clarke. I've got one of these it's technically my brothers but we share it and it's done so much work over the years and then you just fold it up and stick it in the corner id highly recommend it
