1956 green goddess 4 wheel drive fire engine (Bedford rlhz)
Located near Bristol airport
Asking price..Now an even more and ridiculously low £3795 or very nearest offer
Mot and tax exempt... Only 3200 miles from new... That's right.. Three thousand two hundred documented miles.
In good condition, meticulously maintained from new at RAF Benson
4 wheel drive works fine, 5 litre petrol engine recently serviced and converted to electronic ignition.
Has pretty much all its original kit including the auxiliary Godiva pump, only missing the small bore side hoses (like garden hose so not hard to replace.
Was repainted 5 years ago, cab is totally original inside and could do with a lick of paint
Clutch is high on the pedal but loads of adjustment at the arm on the gearbox.
Drives pretty well for its age (drum brakes and no power steering!!!)
These are amazing value & a real bit of British history (google it with a cuppa)

This thing has got to be over the 3.5t limit for a massive chunk of the users on here licences but I've heard that something of this vintage could be driven on a normal licence if its not towing/laden? Can anybody give any clarity on this, as it could really open up a range of people to be potentially interested in something that seems mega value for money!

Pre 1960 commercials license exempt provided it's used unladen. There's some ambiguity as to what counts as a load when you are talking about a GG, since technically the water is a load- but there's official documentation saying they should only be driven with a full tank.
This looks a pretty tidy one, albeit a slightly unusual colour.

I bought one of these when they were getting rid about 10 years ago from an Auction. Was great fun to drive about in!

I believe (but don't quote me) that this can be driven on a pre 97 issued car licence if its got the water tank empty, and therefore unladen

And yes, the handbook states its either got to be driven empty or full as there is no baffling in the 300 gallon tank!

It was kept at RAF Benson, latterly a chinook base and was resprayed using paint from the helicopter repair department
I think it makes a nice change from dark green with a red flash

One could even argue that water isn't a load, it's 'equipment' relevant to the vehicles use. You can carry equipment but not a load. You can tow any weight as well as long as it is also 'unladen'.
Very nice looking truck, been around the RL in collections, looks very tidy. good luck with the sale.

Very nice looking truck, been around the RL in collections, looks very tidy. good luck with the sale. That's the general argument, I'm not sure if anyone has ever had a straight answer on it though. Certainly the hoses, nozzles and other "firefighting" gear they carry (like pickaxes...) is covered under equipment and I suspect the relevant authorities would choose to ignore the water as being too complicated an issue and rather pedantic. Important thing is that you can definitely drive it on a normal full UK car licence  |
