I'm pretty sure there's not a 3.5t van on the market that will legally tow over 3t. The 3.0 Fiat Ducato is a beast, is rated at 3t, is quick and tows better than any other van I've used.
Other than that, I'd get a P38 4.6 V8 on gas or a 3.0 TD LWB Trooper. Had them both, and both superb.
Personally, I'd not even consider towing 2t with any of the vehicles you mentioned. You'd be dragged all over the place, pushed down hills and it'd be lethal when Mr National Express flys past you at 80mph on the motorway.

I've got a gross train weight of 5.5 or 5.2t but no max trailer weight the 80% rule is just a guideline so with an unladen van at about 1.8t then it gives a capacity of over 3t

never been dragged about when towing with my E34, nor has the national express (limited to 60) passed me.

Haha, National Express might supposed to be limited to 60, but they're absolutely not! I did 120,000 miles in a year towing, mainly over 3t, and I was regularly passed on motorways by national express, and I wasn't sticking religiously to 60mph! I've never towed with an E34, but plenty of E39's, A6's and Allroads, and they simply don't compare to a van or 4x4 when it comes to stability.
Train weight is different to the towing capacity too Mr Dodgerover. I'm pretty certain that you'll not get a 3.5t GVW van with a towing capacity greater than 3t.

I asked about this several years ago as I have no towing weight listed and it came up under a VOSA (as was) towing thread , the response I got was:
"Unless there is a listed towing capacity the GTW can be used as the driver sees fit "
Edit obviously, front rear axle loading capacities, trailer capacity all come into it as well

Really? You learn something new everyday! Not sure how that works, and bet it gets complicated as hell if you get pulled. Must be a nightmare to work out..... Especially with regard to grandfather rights and tacho laws etc etc. As far as I knew, all vehicles would have a weight plate to show GVW, GTW etc etc.

That's one advantage to running old stuff! Plus it's always my own stuff or for my own use on a trailer - nothing for anybody else or hire and reward so no tacho required.
I agree about National Express if they're running limited I'm a Dutchman

5 series tourer or merc e320cdi estate
Both have self levelling suspension, huge brakes and keep reasonable MPG.
I've towed with, transits, sprinters, defenders, discoverys, Subarus, Quattros and I would pick an E39 or an S210 merc over any of them
