Bentley Turbo R (4-speed auto with column change)
First Reg: 23/11/1992
MOT: 30/10/2016
Chassis No: 44305
Mileage: 138,000
Colour/Trim: Brewster Green with Parchment Leather
I’ve owned this Turbo R for 3 years and it’s been my regular transport until it failed its MOT last week. After much deliberation (and I mean much!) I’ve decided that I can’t currently justify the outlay to keep it on the road. However, if unlike me you can do some of the work yourself, then this could be a great chance to own one of the ultimate retro rides.
The car failed the MOT on 2 things:
- Broken front n/s coil spring
- Parking brake ineffective
There were also the following advisories:
- Rear n/s & o/s suspension arm bushes deteriorated
- Rear n/s coil spring cup is corroded. Although this is just an advisory, it will need doing sooner rather than later. I already have the replacement cup which will be supplied with the car. However, beware that it’s not a trivial job to replace (I’ve been quoted £480 from a RR/Bentley specialist).
In addition, there's a vibration (and very occasional groan as you come to a halt) from the front brakes. It obviously wasn’t enough to show up on the MOT, however, I suspect the front discs will need skimming/replacing.
Other things:
- There's an oil leak coming from somewhere towards the back of the engine. It doesn't consume a significant amount of oil (it requires a top-up every 3,000 miles) however, it does leave some oil spots on the drive.
- Something has started draining the battery if the car is left for a few days. So I’ve been using the isolator switch in the boot to prevent the battery going flat.
- The last service (done by an RR/Bentley specialist) was in March 2015 @ 130,750 miles, so a service is now overdue. The car actually has a pretty good service history. There are 21 stamps in the service book (all from main dealers or specialists) + various receipts for work done over the last 5 years or so.
Apart from the issues mentioned above, the car runs and drives well for its age/mileage. It’s still a rapid car, and more economical than you might think (I average 17-18mpg).
The lacquer on the bonnet, front grille and back edge of the roof is peeling, and a small area of paint has flaked off the rear bumper. There's also rust just starting to come through on the lower part of the front wings, lower part of the o/s rear arch, and under the n/s rear light. There are obviously other minor blemishes but overall the rest of the bodywork is very clean for its age including underneath.
There’s a small hole on the side of the drivers seat and a some wear on the drivers side carpet, but overall the interior is in very nice condition. The wood dash and door cappings are in very good shape.
The cruise control and seat heaters don't work, and one of the motors in the ventilation system makes a bit of a noise for a few seconds when first switching on the aircon, but otherwise the rest of the electrics are in good working order. The remote control has been lost, so you have to use the key to lock/unlock the doors.
Overall it’s a solid old Turbo R that would make a great project if you have the time and skills to do the work that’s required.
The price is £2950. The car is located in Petersfield, Hampshire. Give me a call on (07941) 739506 if you’re interested.
