Something I have always wondered about, I have been there, didn't see the cars. I know the place was looted in the early 1990s with the fall of the soviet union... and people ignored the dangers and stole everything.. But, I know the evacuated people were forced to leave all vehicles behind, due to contamination, I have read that the parts were being stolen for many years after, so does anyone have anymore pictures or information on this mass of Eastern Bloc/Soviet vehicles? Here is the only picture I have-  Can also be seen at the beginning of this video - There is footage of the cars from the cleanup, these are busses and working vehicles- Thanks for any pics ect, I am just interested where these 1000s of car went, and when. |

You're right, I never saw any either but didn't realise. The old buses scattered around are cool though.
A lot of the steel from the contaminated military vehicles was sold to the Chinese as cheap dirty steel. I can't see why the cars wouldn't have been included.

there's only the buses and a few lorries on google maps. i'm going there next week so hopefully some cool stuff to see

'Most' tour companies won't take you to the car graveyards now as the authoristies have forbidden it due to the levels of contamination, however some of them are willing to break the rules for a few extra Hryvnia.
We were told we weren't allowed in any of the building in Pripyat due to their degraded condition, and 10 minutes later we were on the roof of a 6-storey supermarket.

This thread made me look on google maps, didnt realise there's google street view in Chernobyl/Pripyat! spent a while mooching around.

Bionerd on YouTube is great, she spends a lot of time in Pipryat with equipment. The machinery and vehicles are still heavily radioactive.
She has disappeared for months on YT though.

So when the scrap that has been stolen gets recycled and melted down, the material is still radioactive?
Quick Google suggests that its not unknown for new metals/goods to be radioactive!

Have just returned from kiev and can confirm there is no cars there. saw one big saloon on its side from the bus but that was it. kiev is full of abandonded soviet cars though

Very few people chose a colour they like regardless of the resale implications. |
