Said I'd help re-commission a Manta A, it's been parked for about 8 years, but is still in nice condition.
So the first step is something I've never done before, replacing lost keys!
Keys that where lost so long ago, the owner can't remember how many or what they looked like.
I've had a look and popped a door lock, the steering lock has headless bolts and I don't really want to cut it off, I may not be able to replace it.
What's my next step? A locksmith? How likely is he to have 1970's Opel lock blanks and without a key to copy.....? Are the door and boot locks the same as the ignition lock on a 70's Manta? Perhaps I could remove one and get a key made?
Any suggestions please, never had this problem before.
Thanks
Andy

It's possible that a locksmith could make some replacements I guess, I spoke to a local company a few years ago when I had a Viva with no keys and they reckoned one of their guys could do it if I could leave him a lock to play with for a couple of weeks. As for the headless bolts on the steering lock they can be drilled or chiselled off and replaced with standard bolts. And yes, doors and ignition should be on the same key. Another option of course is to get onto the Manta club forums, I think there are one or two people breaking A series cars on there at the moment so worth a go

As Rob says the shear bolt is just an M8 bolt, i use allen head ones to replace with as its a little too tight to get a socket on a normal type.
If you cannot get keys made to match the lock you will not get the ignition barrel out of the housing. But the later B housings are the same if you need to replace it. On the B there are 3 or 4 profiles of key blade and the wrong profile will not fit the lock bodies you have. If you can work out what profile the keys should be and get a replacement ignition barrel with key of the same profile it is possible to change the tumblers in the lock around to match a different key. At least it is on the door and boot lock. I've never managed to get the petrol flap one apart to change.
Manta club might be the easiest option for a full lock set and just swap them all. If you just need parts i have a few spares including barrel housings and the odd lock and key. But i do not have a full set.

You should be able to hotwire it without a key to get the motor running which for me is always important If you can get one of the locks removed and dismantled, I'd ask your local locksmith* if they can hand-cut a new key to fit. Not too difficult if you have a new key blank and the time/patience to do it. Older / high mileage cars often have basic locks with worn lock internals which means the new key doen't have to be 100% perfect * You'll need to find an experienced locksmith, not a key-cutter in the local shops retrorides.proboards.com/thread/120463/1996-citroen-ax-5d-sold#page=3A full replacement lock set would be the opther option

the ignition barrel normally has a few extra of the locking fingers compared to the doors and boot so it might not be that easy

Thanks everyone.
One of the problems is that the front wheels have been left at an angle, won't be able to push the car out of the garage, without the steering lock off!
I'm meant to be advising/helping him, now it's turned into a bloody saga!

Those blank bolt heads on the ignition barrel are sheer bolts which apparently sheer at 8nm (or at least they are in my mini) so not a huge amount and can easily be knocked around with a punch.
I had it a good few years ago, mate lost the keys for his old transit van. We called a chap out who cut a pair for £100 which saved us a lot of ball ache.

I usually cut a slot in shear bolts with a hacksaw or dremal then use a screwdriver to unscrew.

Can you not drill the shear bolts out, well the heads so it releases the steering lock.
Had to do that on the Daughters Arosa to change the pedal box.
