I would like to refit a deep dish suede wheel to my Dolly at some stage. With the car lacking any notable security features (besides it getting papped everywhere and waking the dead on a first start...) a quick release boss has been on the cards forever anyway, but then, this happens. You need to be stretch armstrong to reach the stalks. A weld on QR boss would solve this, but I haven't seen a road legal one anywhere... Does such a thing exist? Is it even likely to get noticed? I need to replace the column anyway and the new one I have takes a different boss, so killing multiple birds with a single shot... Cheers

You can get wireless steering wheel controls that operate most functions. They are intended for people with limited use of their limbs but no reason why they wouldn't work for your application as well. However reaching for switches isn't a problem - my A35 had indicator switch in centre of dash below windscreen and dip switch on floor is common position for older cars.

Whilst I can see the benefit of what you've suggested, it isn't really what I'm going for... I can reach the stalks with it as pictured. It's just bloody annoying!
I'm intending to reduce the height gained from swapping steering wheels, but gaining a QR. The stock Dolomite boss was approximately 1" thick and the stock wheel had a roughly 1" dish too. Replacement boss for an OMP wheel is closer to 3.5" for some reason, I'm still investigating modifying the boss to around 1". Add in a 1.5" (I think that's the depth of the thinnest NRG Slimline one), plus the dish of the new wheel I have in mind and there lies the problem...

Can you not have your original boss cut down and modified so it's shallower? Ones I've dealt with in the past could possibly be 2" shorter.
I had a Q/R boss in my old car. had a few dealings of various sorts and never had anything said about it. Then again the only reason it was there was so I could get in the darn thing around the cage.

Yes. But the boss I have won't fit the new column I have as it has a different spline at the top, meaning I need a new boss anyway. If I were to weld on a quick release I would then only need to buy the quick release and not another new boss.
I want to know where I stand with using a weld on quick release boss in a road car as most I have found state not for road use. Not entirely sure why, though.

Not for road use is just them covering their as it's not been properly approved by tuv and the like. If it's safe it's safe. If it ain't it ain't. We don't have tuv like rules in the UK, things don't need any technical testing or approval. Construction and use regs define what's legal and if it's legal it could have been made by your nan in her kitchen you can still use it if it meets all the criteria.

.....as most I have found state not for road use. Not entirely sure why, though. As stated above that statement is to cover the manufacturer from being sued by some fool who quick releases it on a motorway and wipes out a coach full of nuns going to the seaside and a transit full of kittens on a trip to a dairy and then stating that it's a design flaw as it can be released whilst being driven. Not for road use = not idiot proof. Biggest issue with that set-up in the photo is the collapsible Mountney boss - another gem created by the need to protect themselves - those adapters could be a fraction of the height without the "collapsible" and modifying that would be how I would reduce the height.

Aye, modifying the boss was my first port of call until I accidentally bought a replacement column with the different spline on it. So my hub won't actually fit the new column. Therefore, welding on a QR boss completely removes the need to buy a replacement hub... Will go and do a buy when I have funds. Then make a cutting and sticking.
Excellent, thanks chaps.

I have a spare boss and... Boss here if you need one cheaply.
