I've searched and searched and can't see to find an answer to my question-
Should my direct debit tax payment be automatically canceled when the new owner taxes the vehicle?
Just had a payment go through for a car I sold a few months ago.
Thanks

this is kind of what i was asking in my thread last year, but in reverse. if you do nothing as the vendor, the only notification the DVLA will get is when the buyer has sent off the V5 and it plops on dvla mat.
so, is that new owner driving round merrily on your tax and name on the V5, deliberately dragging their heels

Seller sends off the V5.
Also if its close to the end of the month DVLA will take the money so i always cancel mine. Strangely enough if this happens they are not so keen to return it unless you call them up and nag them.

That is strange. I suppose it would help to give them a deadline for when they have to return the payment right?

I'd just sorn it online if it's close to the end of the month. Can take a while to process the transfer of ownership and I'm not sure they will refund you too hastily if it clicks over a month while it's getting done.

I've been caught out with this. As far as DVLA are concerned regards tax it is the date they process the new keeper request and not the date of sale that they take into account. If you don't sorn it can lead to them receiving a month's tax from both new keeper and previous owner.

I've never sorn'd one, I just cancel the DD as soon as it's off the end of the street, lol. Sold 3 cars this year and had no comeback from DVLA... yet

It's only at end of month I've had an issue. If I'm selling anytime after the 20th I sorn to ensure I don't pay tax into the following month.

Sold 3 cars this year and had no comeback from DVLA... yet That is a good idea, but it can be risky if the DVLA don't get the logbook or if you give the logbook to the seller (unless you send off the yellow slip in the case of a trader) and they don't send it off. In that case you are left with a vehicle in your name which is untaxed and liable potentially for a fine. Yup, I almost got caught out by this. Regarding sal, you have two choices - Sell the vehicle online using THIS link. From the moment you enter the details the car will be SORN'd. As a bonus two other things will happen
-As long as you print off the sale bit and email the various bits to yourself and the buyer when prompted the DVLA cannot claim they did not receive the logbook -The new buyer will get the logbook within a week as opposed to weeks and weeks, if not months depending on your postman.
Everyone's a winner this way. Well, maybe not the poor sods the DVLA due to the automation... - Send the logbook off the old fashioned way, but SORN it before you send it off
Personally I prefer Option 1. It's a "tighter" and more sure way of knowing who has got what.

ChasR. I wasn't aware you could do that. Good info thanks mate. You are not the only one. When I was at a very well known BMW dealership in Birmingham they claimed it couldn't be done that I didn't know what I was on about (I have to sell the vehicles at my workplace once they are too knackered (no retros I am afraid, trucks etc. is my game). For me it's great as without-sounding-like-a-git it puts the V5 issues in the hands of the DVLA and not me. A few of us on here now do it . But I do worry about it needing less people to be at the DVLA :/. Maybe I am a socialist at heart more than I think.
