Evening all, it's getting to the time of year where at least one of the fleet has a winter lay up, outside. This time it'll be the '91 Rover 220 GTI.
So options are:
a) uncovered on the drive, exposed to the weather and steelworks fallout (coke oven ash, acid rain etc) but it'll dry quick.
b) lightweight cover, keep the worst off it.. but let it breathe.
c) fork out for a weatherproof cover. Keep it dry underneath.
I was going to SORN it and wheels off for security etc.
But, £20 a month saving contact hardly seems worth it.
Thoughts welcome.

Option A Covers in my experience are never good for cars outside Just found the other thread. It's currently got a couple of old covers on it, reckon that they are coming off tomorrow night. Wont stay shiny longer than a week... But long term it's better.

It's taken me many hours to get rid of the marring on the LC bonnet and roof with a rotary after 1 winter under a cover It took me an hour with a clay bar and some lime prime to bring the paintwork back to life on the 740 after 3 years sitting unused on the drive with no cover

I did notice after last winter under cover, that the roof needed love.
Year before it was my daily, filthy and unloved, no issues.
That's the covers coming off tomorrow night.

Yeah even with my "soft" cover I've noticed abrasion. I'm leaving it until I get the car into more decent shape and / or into a garage.
By the way, I personally reccomend "sumex" as they are relatively inexpensive but are 100% waterproof. Hang on, though, because they have a vent which allows air to circulate which is the "breathable" part. I tried a breathable cover and for my car with holes no seals, it all went to pot.
Sumex waterproof vent cover <-- a search like that ought to yield results.
Good luck though!
EDIT: just had a thought? What if you had a really soft piece of cloth and then a cover on top. Might that work or am I being silly?

I'd also go for option A - no cover. Wash and wax it for protection but let air circulate.
Either that or option D - buy one of those 'tent' type of storage cover that Machine Mart sell (though they must be cheaper elsewhere because MM are always expensive). That will keep the weather of it and allow air to circulate. Depends if there's space on the drive. I keep thinking about one for the Eriba Puck we've got.

Do you mean the pop up garages at about £500?

It is however a bloody great frame to transport unless I broke it down into component parts
