1995 Swift GS converted to Gti
First off, a bit of background information. I have owned this car twice now, first time i saw it for sale at the side of the road as a standard GS, it was incredibly clean for one of these, and as a Gti nut many years ago, i couldnt resist buying it. Anyway, i sold it to a friend as I always knew i wouldnt use it much (other cars on the road at the same time) He looked after the car well, until a landrover parked behind him on a hill without putting its handbrake on and it ran into the back of the swift. This knocked his enthusiasm for it, as it was badly damaged...so i bought it back, repaired the damage and converted it to Gti spec with some parts i had 'left over' from my Gti days. Ive enjoyed using it occasionally, but again I just don't use it enough so it is part of a clear out!
Right, on to the car. A standard GS comes with the factory fitted body kit, fog lights and interior the same as a Gti, along with other bits like electric windows and mirrors. They originally had a 1.3 single cam 8v engine. So this is what I have fitted...some second hand and some new, all parts have only done a few hundred miles since the conversion:
1.3 twin cam 16v GTi engine, gearbox, driveshafts, front hubs (gearbox has a different final drive ratio to a GS)
New cambelt kit, oil/filter, gearbox oil etc
New genuine suzuki GTi specific radiator (£££!)
A good used set of Koni adjustable dampers and lowering springs
GTi front brake set up using new bosch discs and pads, and stainless braided hoses.
Rear GTi anti roll bar fitted properly by welding in the proper floor plates which luckily are still available from suzuki (all swifts other than GTi don't have a rear anti roll bar at all)
Polybushed front wishbones and anti roll bar mounts.
Nissan 200sx S13 wheels (very lightweight) with 195/45 15 tyres
So, it drives really well....brakes very well, handles nicely, engine is lovely. Mechanically there isnt anything it needs doing. Interior is in really nice condition, clean and tidy, no tears/cigarette burns. Bodywork wise, its had a couple of small repair patches welded on the sills in the past but absolutely nothing compared to how these normally rust. There is a little 5p sized rust bubble just starting on the leading edge of the bonnet. Rear arches are original/never repaired which is very unusual. There are a couple of very small scuffs/marks here and there, the kind that you need to come and see rather than trying to show them in photos but they are very minor.
I have some other parts to complete the full GTi conversion that are available to go with the car at the right price. There is a complete Gti rear hub/wishbone/disc brake setup with is all polybushed, personally i never fitted it as I think the base spec drums work better and are more reliable! I also have the correct brake bias valve for the rear discs. I have a set of Gti clocks which have the 9K rpm rev counter. Then if you want to get carried away there is the Gti interior light dimmer switch, and the fuel flap and release lever/cables so it operates from inside the car rather than a key.
Not so good bits:
The damage caused by the run away landrover. I have straightened and repaired the rear panel and nearside rear quarter behind the fuel flap. I have fitted another rear bumper and another tailgate. All have been painted myself and while its very presentable, to make it right you would want to get a bodyshop to make a good job of it all to look nice. You really need to look at this before you make me an offer to check you are happy with it.
The drivers window falls off its runners when you wind it down so that wants pulling apart to see what is going on.
Viewing welcome in Ardleigh, near Colchester in Essex.
