I have been considering a xkr or xk8 lately. I have got in touch with a seller of a 1999 xkr coupe for £7000. He sent a few pics by email and the car looks good. I don't have a link or pics.
Anyway I'm wondering if its worth pursuing. It has 67k miles. I checked the mot history and its fine and its always been mot'd. The seller listed the mileages of when it had been serviced. The last service was march this year at 66k, the previous service was at 57k, going by the mot history that was in 2008. The seller has had it a few years but only serviced it earlier this year. The wear on the drivers seat is minimal so i don't doubt the low miles.
Anyway I'm not sure what normal with classics and low mileage cars and servicing. Does the lack of servicing mean its not worth considering?

Not necessarily, I'd go to see it before you can know whether to go further. With this kind of car condition is everything. A car that has had minimal use and has been kept garage doesn't need a lot doing.
I'd change the oil annually no matter what mileage but I'm a bit fussy like that.
The other side of the coin is that cars benefit from being used regularly so check gaiters, bushes, tyres, all things that can deteriorate just sitting there.
It just depends on how well it has been looked after so look at his garage, that will tell you a lot.

I'm inclined to differ on this one.
The 'Jaguar' V8 quickly gained a reputation as a problematic engine after introduction, a particular issue was the likelihood of expensive faults developing if it was not meticulously serviced on the dot - attention to timing gear was particularly important. Jaguar had to replace very many failing engines at comparatively low mileages. A chap I worked for had a mint low-mileage XJ8 which needed a new engine when it was less than 3 years old.
Factor the supercharger into the mix & this cruddy engine became even more of a diva. Most warranty schemes have excluded the XKR & XJR from their cover due to the engines being so temperamental and so very prone to developing expensive faults.
Full service history showing everything has been done when it's supposed to have been done is usually a nice thing to have; with the Jag V8, particularly the supercharged versions, it's an essential thing to have. The car's not that cheap either, personally speaking I'd walk away & keep looking!

thanks for the replies guys
ANy car i do buy i usually get serviced anyway if it has not been done recently. The car in question has passed its mot's first time, many times and has not had many advisories in the last 10 year. I guess what mkX has said has given me a lot of food for thought, jag owners suggest asking if the tensioners have been done, if not budget a grand for the upgrade but expend to spend money on whatever car i buy. As said the temperamental jag v8 and supercharger should have had a good servicing schedule over the years.

At that mileage you definitely need to consider the timing belt tensioners.
It's the Achilles heel of that engine and not the easiest job to do. Expensive if you take to a garage but doable DIY. Requires a specialist tool but you can fabricate your own.
Will need doing imminently if not done already

panda select, yeah i noticed that one but never paid much attention, I'm no expert but i think the price is high for a 98, its hard to judge without seeing it and checking the service history. Its also in London and I'm in Coventry so its not that handy. As a guide, a guy on the jag forum paid £7k for a 4.2 '03 xk8 coupe, from a dealer, he still had to do a few things to it but thats to be expected with these cars apparently. Yeah i have been advised to go for the 4.2 engine if possible, better gearbox and engine, or try and find one with the tensioners done, if not factor in paying £1k to get the job done. There is one at a dealers in Rugby/Daventry which looks similar to the one posted already. Its 15 miles away. Really done about 95k miles due to speedo change. www.ebay.co.uk/itm/2000-W-JAGUAR-XK8-4-0-AUTO-COUPE-/152258048730?hash=item23734972da:g:GjUAAOSwNRdX66o~Also there is 3 near me but its the same dodgy guy who must buy xk8's and repair them and sell them, he uses different accounts and is trying to look like a private seller, his name is Dan.

In spite of what I've said above I have always liked the XK8 / XKR & think you're getting an awful lot of car for your money. If it was my money I'd have to go for the XKR even knowing it's the more unreliable car. I just think it's a shame they never did a manual option. You're talking about buying a £7K car & spending £1K on servicing so I'd surmise your budget is at least £8K. It's a decent budget, you'll find something decent for your money but will have to make compromises from the ideal. The ideal: One owner or low number of owners. (One lady owner being tops). Private sale. Full main dealer service history. Low miles. Garaged. Obviously in well-tended condition. Full MOT. Close. Perfect test drive. Fully specced. Not accident repaired. etc. I'm also guessing that you'd prefer a newer model if that's do-able within budget? You're not going to tick every box above for £8K. You need to search the market daily to see what's coming up for sale and it's better to drive a few hundred miles to get the best car for your money rather than buy an inferior car just because it's on your doorstep. If you go with the later, better, 4.2 litre then you could look at cars with higher mileages as long as the service book is stamped up to date. Always ask if the car is accident repaired as a lot of private or commercial vendors won't volunteer this information & it has an impact on value which can mean that 'bargain' is merely priced at market value. Don't be afraid to haggle, if you play hard ball you can probably shave £500 off an £8K car which you'll probably have to spend sorting out niggles. I personally don't like buying from dealers or the trade but sometimes there's a car you can't pass by. A couple within your budget that caught my eye on a perfunctory ebay search, both with the 4.2 litre engine but both with higher mileage, albeit not high for the age of the cars:- XK8XKR

Cheers for posting the pics and links. I have seen both and already have the light blue xkr in my watch list on ebay. As for the black one well i really dislike black wheels and I'm not keen on the registration being on the front apron either.
I'm away on holiday for one week tomorrow, i will have another look once i return.
I don't have any problems travelling but a lot of the adverts on ebay and autotrader are a bit lazy, they don't put a lot of effort into it, so you don't often see that great adver that really speaks to you and gets your interest.
