Today, tried a EBay head gasket sniff test, the fluid stayed blue, which is meant to show a lack of exhaust gasses in the coolant, if I've done the test correctly.
The part in the instructions that say anti-freeze will negate the results is a bit confusing, do they mean if anti- freeze gets into the liquid or if the coolant has anti-freeze in it, the test won't work?
Anyway, I'd been happier with a positive result, at least then I'd know what's wrong!
So, the only other thing I can think of is that the water pump isn't circulating the coolant properly, and this where being a bit of an hoarder pays off, the plastic finned pump that was removed to make way for a very expensive metal version will go back on, the rad will be flow tested and we will see....
The good news is that if the pump is furbared for some reason and because it's been in both engines, it means I've spent 2 years+ without the Triumph, purchased 2 engines, changed one and redesigned the cooling system for nothing...still kept me out of the pub, wasting money on beer.
