UPDATE: ALTERNATOR HAS SEIZED... IT WILL RUN BUT NOT ADVISED AS BELT REMOVED AND THIS ALSO RUNS THE WATERPUMP.
Where to start with this dog of a car. Well it’s a 1994 XJR - the Early 4 litre Bomb proof Straight Six Not the fragile V8, this is the first year that those clever folk at Jaguar decided to bolt a supercharger onto the already adequate 4000cc Straight 6 Engine. This thing is full of power and torque 326 bhp and 378 lb•ft - The 0 to 60 mph time was generally around the 5.7 to 6.4 second mark. Yes it has plenty of niggly faults with it but the fact remains it hauls ass and costs about the same to run as a run of the mill family car due to a very expensive BRC LPG System.
Park your ass in the comfy sofa like leather seats and you can pretty quickly rack up a whole bunch of speeding tickets….. Seriously you have no idea how fast this thing is going as it so comfy.
So the list that puts everyone off:
No Air con Pump – It has windows however and they are electric - the removal of the pump saves weight and gains an extra 2.7 BHP – Think of this as the “Light weight Racing version”
Missing head lining (very common problem on these) – Weight Saving? – How many Race cars do you see with head linings?
Lacquer Peal, Rusty arches, A few knocks and dints – Or as its called in the Scene “Patina”
Front damper bush clunking
Rear wheel bearing needs replacing
Front seat goes back when turned off but does not come forward on startup – have to do it yourself rather than being all lazy and letting the car do everything for you. Unplug the motor and it will stay where it is.
LCD Clock not working (But I doubt you will ever find one that is)… I will supply a £3.00 Chinese Micky mouse watch and some Blu tack if needs be.
Worn Leather or again lets call it “Patina”
Bit of an oil leak (Nothing major and doesn’t burn oil) keeps the sump from going rusty
High millage - 200000 of them but still starts on the button with a super strong engine
Will need a bit of welding – Outriggers / jacking points
The Good bits:
Bomb proof Straight 6
Very expensive BRC LPG system - Equivalent to 35MPG – Yes the same running cost as a mondeo or some other bland car
Later XJR / XKR 18” Alloys with good tyres (These do however make the car tramline a little – common complaint with wide wheels on these cars)
Personal plate valued at over £800 - C17 XJR – Yes it’s an XJR wearing an XJR plate…. How exciting
The Best colour – Black…. Why paint a car in any other colour
Coolant Bypass hose replaced (Very expensive and time consuming job, inlet everything off, supercharger off just to get to that pesky hose) - just have a little google, My guess at a garage labour alone would cost knocking on for £1000 to swap out that £15 hose
Inlet manifold gasket replaced
Alternator Belt replaced
Front disks and pads replaced (Mintex)
Coolant flush and refill
MOT Till December 2016
Key comes on a lovely Leather Jaguar Key Ring – Classy when you throw it in the bowl.
I have it on classic car policy and it is cheaper to insure than the wife’s Pug 206 – It also cost not a lot more to run but it about 89 times faster and cooler.
Reason for sale? Well I bought it on a whim – shouldn’t have as I have a number of other projects (52 Chevy Pickup, BMW powered Volvo Amazon, 53 A40 Somerset) so it has to go. Looking for a Van – pickup – estate etc.
My intention was to do the niggly bits (Some of which I have done) then murder it out (All black) and look like a complete badass. Maybe you could do this.
So to sum up it’s a bit of a dog (Sorry I mean has patina), has niggly faults (It’s a project) but goes like poop of a well lubed stick and costs the same to run as your mums grocery run car. Looks cool in a classy way.
Car Located in tewkesbury. Price? Well I would like to see close to £1500 but open to offers / swaps / PX - These things sell for £4000 in good condition AND this has £2000 pounds work of LPG system.
