The time has come to do the valve clearances on the M3. It would be nice to have a means of measuring the shims that are too big or small for the job. I currently have a vernier gauge but I figured I may as well get a micrometer.
Given that it is a daily and that the shim set for around 300 shims is around £260 with discount I'll be ordering just what I need with me hopefully not needing any shims or only a couple of them at best,not that I am tight or anything. If I do end up getting the shims I guess I could always hire out the set with a deposit on top...
I have seen a variety of micrometers for sale from £5 to £120. For what I am doing would the cheap 'uns do the job or is there a reason why they are so cheap (i.e they fall to bits etc.).
I've been meaning to buy one so as to measure the thickness of brake discs anyway, instead of my usual fiddly method, which is to measure up two washers and then put them in between the vernier gauge and the disc with them hopefully staying putbut inevitably falling about all over the shop.
