Nice save Sumpcracker, it's such shame how these Bee Emms seem to attract the sort of people who like ragging them sideways or just wrecking them altogether. I had a lovely 91 325i two years back, what a machine !!! The warble from the 6 pot and 'shotgun' click of the 5 speed box. proper car. Regardless of your later plans for it at least it was saved the indignity of having a hi-ab strapped across its roof.

I ve just found an e34 518 swapped to m50b20 at a decent price. The major problem is that the car was painted with a brush...is it worth saving? depends how badly you want it, for me no, you will never get your money back and there are easier cheap projects out there. Some good E34s on Ebay under £1000. I think they need to be manual and 6 cylinder to be worth the trouble, the manual 6 pot cars seem to have vanished there are no M50 525i to be seen, I think they have all been used/scrapped for engine conversions on other BMWs. (I was guilty of that myself some years ago) I'm just wondering if I should Remove the tow bar or not? I usually do on cars, I'm taking one up the tip every month, but some people actually use the things... I mean god its ugly, but not to someone with a jet ski or trailer. School boy error on the ride height, I forgot to shorten the bump stops, its gone down 15mm now.... ![B-|](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/notamused.png) Thanks for comments guys, the paint came up mainly because of the quality paint used by BMW then, My E90 wouldn't be the same, a bird poo is fatal on that, I think BMW go to Halfords for paint now.

I fully agree, they get destroyed at a strong rate, and things like this get weighed in all the time, and then 6 minutes later, they go expensive and people start asking 15k for a front wing. E30s seemed to double in value over night, they were getting constantly bounced off drift walls up to that point. I hope if it gets sold to the right person when finished it will be improved in condition rather than let go. And with the savage prices I charge for cars, it will most likely be haha.

I love these, settled for an e39 in the end as couldn't find a cheap one close enough, nice car but BMWgot thenlooks right on this one IMO. I always remove tow bars, at some point I always forget it's there and there's shin contact when I walk behind it that results in a few curse words ![:)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/smiley.png)

Very nice looking - quite a transformation! I briefly owned a 1989 F-reg 525iSE that had been uprated with an M30B35 (manual 'box), in which I saw an indicated 147 units of speed down a private runway - the fastest I've ever been in a car, even quicker than a chipped 1988 E30 325iSE I had, which 'only' managed 140. ![:D](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/grin.png) Shortly afterwards, I discovered the nearside engine mount rubber had completely detached itself from the metal backing plates; it was only the weight of the boat anchor that was holding it in the bay! ![;-|](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/squint.png) There's an old G-reg 520i E34 (with the M20B20) that's been sat for yonks around the corner from where my parents live, with an old Land-Rover recovery truck parked up behind it. Must admit, I've been quite tempted to save both...

That red paint is jumping off the page at me - great result!
Couldn't agree more with the sentiment about the thoughtful design of earlier BMWs. Everything just fits together nicely. The first job I did on my E28 was changing a sidelight bulb and the design even made that a joy! I will however state that the starter motor positioning on the M30 Is awful - must gave been outsourced to British Leyland!
Will keep watching this.

Astranaut - yes, the point about the shin has already happned. bstardchild - thanks Thrasher - A little up the road, but not legal yet, looking forward to big sunroof motoring again. Takra - your 635 is lovely! SORRY FOLKS GOING OFF TOPIC FOR A BIT... Top speed is a funny thing, never got my head around the gearing/aerodynamic/torque ratio. The E30 is a bit square for top speeds, I never saw much more than that with a Turbo M20 motor, My 944T had some long legs but I never pushed it in 5th as that's not what you do with a high boost car built in a shed, I saw an indicated 160 a couple of times, but unsure how truthful the speedo was, if it was right 170 would be possible. ![](http://i1224.photobucket.com/albums/ee369/sumpcracker/bttr.png) Then there was the Audi S2, (Nothelle N300, with RS2 bits/380hp) which was shaped like a brick, and happily spiked 165, it felt ok for an old car at that speed too. ![](http://i1224.photobucket.com/albums/ee369/sumpcracker/48f2fc90-f4eb-4a11-959a-bd9b3b633e0e_1.jpg) (It was a savage off the line also) Another good top end machine was one of the finest driving machines I owned, a rather unsuspecting Z4 Coupe, 3.0SI. Not the actual top speed, but the way it did it with such ease- ![](http://i1224.photobucket.com/albums/ee369/sumpcracker/z4c3.png) It was ltd to 155, but used to hit 157, then realise and pull back to 155. ![](http://i1224.photobucket.com/albums/ee369/sumpcracker/speedo.png) But the one that really threw me was my E90 BMW. Not the speed achieved (my fastest was in a R32 GTR) , but the fact I wasn't going for it, and assumed it was little over 100, there was no noise!, no feeling! and at around 4000 RPM - not that busy, a genuine "why the F is everyone driving so slow?" ![](http://i1224.photobucket.com/albums/ee369/sumpcracker/Untitled.png) Emilia took this snap, which is when I knew about it. The reason I find this bizarre, its a 2.0 diesel, and it pulls well to 4700rpm, which was around 162. In a 2.0 diesel, 3 up full of luggage. The quoted top speed was 143 - clearly 5th - not 6th, I guess Alpina class that as an overdrive. Long gears and a million ft of torque, it crosses countries with such ease and economy, its the reason I cant see the point in building a fast retro anymore and just fanny around with wheels and springs.

Dammit man, this isn't the way it was mean't to be !!! I was going to soothe the premature loss of my E28 many years ago with a nice E39 540 or something, Now you've got me wanting one of these again.
Only driven a 525i manual of this type and it was really good,as you say really well made and thought out.
My uncle had an H reg M5 brand new ( Graphite grey 3.6 with turbofans/M-system ) and it was bloody wonderful, but i'll never have one of those :-D

There's a red one of these by me surrounded by weeds up someone's driveway. I'm sure it's communicating with me telepathically every time I go past it... I hear 'save me from this hell...' I however have no spare space or spare cash to comfort it at this time. From memory it has something like these bolted to it... However, I think it's far from M5 territory. I should get a picture of it right?

Damn this thread! I have found myself thinking fondly of my old '84 525TDS Tourer again. Curiosity got the better of me and I found myself looking on ebay. Not many on there, more being broken than sold. But there is one local to me, a '95 525 TDS Tourer! Burger!

Thrasher - do it, these things need love, and they are such a nice car, its rewarding. Perfect retro daily, and a good investment, they wont ever be worth lots but its nice to know they are going the right way if you are sticking money in one. Rude - Mine is getting there, maybe its time for no2 to get in the que? pics needed. Smiler - you know. Just... you know. Rafftank, These were rusty when I got them 10? years ago, they were on a 525 I broke for the engine, I believe they are Eibach, but there isn't much to go by. Very easy to swap. I think the strut perches may differ as I'm sure the front was lower on the other car. I'm getting there, I did the tow bar the traveller way as I think the bar left in place will do it a favour if it gets hit in the rear. (I did even it up after jet washing the rear end. ![](http://i1224.photobucket.com/albums/ee369/sumpcracker/IMG_0983.jpg) I fitted the 518 boot lid, to lose the spoiler holes and dents, it was not a 5 minute job, threading th boot loom in and swapping the lock, making it fit.. there is a liner and a tool kit also. While jet washing, the hose popped partly off the tap, in my bathroom (no outside tap here) this is likely when my German neighbour was talking to me about Donald Trump, anyway, why was the plug in? I don't know but I properly flooded the bathroom. After coming in and initially shi11ing myself, I proceeded to mop it up before Mrs Sumpcracker came home, as I forced the mop head in the now full bucket to squeeze out the mop, the F£$%^ing bucket went over and also flooded the hall carpet. Swearing about this I then knocked her makeup off the shelf with the mop handle into the sink full of water. If I don't post anymore, its because I am either in A&E or the boot of the E34. In a bag. With my arms cut off.

Have you thought about getting a boat for that water problem there? So this morning I took a detour and went to find the red car. Here is some secret squirrel pics hot off the processing chip: I did knock too, and.... It's not for sale. I couldn't see inside for the condensation on the windows but it was black for sure. Story is that it's on it's way to the big ol' US of A in a few days to live a life on burgers and gas, lets hope it is in the process of being saved. Vehicle details... In fact, I did put up the vehicle details but then took them off because it felt like I was pulling it's pants down, thought I'd let you all do the research and be as surprised as I was.
