Yes, I'm back again but this time I have a budget I think max would have to be 2k for now as I'd need to start saving allot more to go anymore than that. I really would like to go something to work on and build up over time and mod, possibly start a bit of track racing eventually But I can't decide for the life of me at all hence the many threads just been getting ideas and sort of built up a picture now. i was thinking just going rwd only at first but I don't know. I don't know if I'd get bored of it quick by going fwd again saying that I guess some fwd cars are incredibly fun to drive. Looked at an Mx5 mk1 would love one but the problem is it's a little too small for my needs I do need to take passengers places every now and then and also go carp fishing occasionally so need to put that in aswell. I was now thinking maybe a mark 2 fiesta and create something a bit unique but I'm not 100 percent sure so still need some ideas to jump on something mkix cheers for the help and everyone else on here you're all great ![:)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/smiley.png) oh and that 340 would still be on the cards if i could find one slightly closer to me not really bothered about 3 now aswell to be honest I'd jump at a 5 door if one did appear. But I don't know what's happened to them recently I'm browsing everywhere daily aha and still can't find one. It's so hard to decide it's untrue Criteria really is i just want something that's fun and to enjoy driving it.
Cheers again

Go for a Volvo - Any type - Still out there, still cheap, nearly every volvo looks cool especially slammed on banded steels and they are very hard to ruin.
Fiestas are great, but nowadays they are too rusty, tired, and you will get moody looks if you find a good one and customise it as they are more respected in mint condition.
Sometimes when you can't decide you just have to get anything that gets you by! - Even the BMW M1-n1 (I steadfastly REFUSE to call that a mini as the bmw simply isnt!) is becoming very affordable and you can do quite a bit with them - expect to see 900 quid minis in the next few months ..... same with some of the later model 3 series after the e36 - loads of bargains there as long as you stick to the 318/320 - especially the 318 touring - lovely looking car ....
food for thought

Ebay Auto trader Gumtree Bargain pages Free ads The classic car sites like car and classic rarely seem to get updated but I do keep checking them There's a significant number of cars being put on the Car & Classic site on a daily basis, (worldwide). Another worthwhile search is the newsnow website which will combine results from various sites like Preloved, Car & Classic, Gumtree, etc. searches work best outside the site so Google, (for example), "newsnow volvo 340". This site will, unfortunately, pull up historic ads so you may find yourself drooling over an ad before realising that it was posted 2 years ago.

What about a 205 Gti? Fun and should only go up in value.

205 GTi is a great shout. But alot will need suspension work for the track and not many are at the £2k mark without being a bag of curse word. Get a good one though and I doubt you'll lose out at all.
Not quite a retro but I'd consider a Clio 172. They have a very old school feel about them but with modern touches. IMHO they are the last spiritual successor to the 205 GTi, and maybe the older Clios if I had ever driven one. They still cock a wheel, have lift off oversteer on demand but in a progressive not-quite-so-widowmarkery way. I hate to say it but bar the 205 (and only just!) the Clio was about the best hot hatch I owned out of the lot. Insurance may be tricky but I managed to insure the M3 for £380 on a daily policy. I would also say they are not as cheap as they once were. I sold mine for more than I paid for it used as a daily, and TBH I thought as did a few others that I overpaid when I bought it.
They're very practical and bar the cambelt are cheap to run. 40MPG on a motorway trip at 70ish? You bet.
For a more retro based car I'd be looking at Clio Valvers.
E36 BMW may be worth a punt but IMO for track work they require alot of work compared to cars that are more fun and quicker out of the box.
It's shame about the MX-5 but I know exactly what you mean about practicality.

Saying that I'm considering a mk1 mx5 n/a. How much stuff could you actually get in one if you really tried to fill it lol. Friends left and right are telling me to get one. If needed I could probably get some cheap run about and if i do need to ship family around i could use that as a second car later on.

In all honesty if you are thinking about saving cash, just get one car ![:)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/smiley.png) . How much can you fit in? Not much! You do have some storage behind the seats mind you and the boot requires care if you don't want to dent the outer wings ; it's an easy thing to do. That said, I'd buy one if you want to give one a go and then sell it when you need something more sensible. It's exactly what I did. Just buy the best one you can afford ![:)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/smiley.png) .

You can get tailored luggage for the MX which does help a bit in making the most of the boot space. You could lose the space saver and carry a can of tyre weld to make a bit more room too. You've got the battery in the boot so that takes some space up and as Chas said it is easy to dent the wings (and the boot lid) with careless loading. Boot rack is another way of carrying stuff and again as Chas said the parcel shelf area holds quite a lot if you have the roof up or a hardtop on. You can get bags that pop onto the existing tonneau fittings and hang down behind the seats as well.
Never gonna be a load lugger though !

328i Coupe. Cheap to buy, cheap to run and loads of fun. I have to admit that I am very 1 eyed BMW fan and love all BMW with at least 6 cylinders.

I had an MGF that was cheap (£1000 with 12 months MOT) already had the coolant pipes changed and HG done no rust anywhere and full leather interior. It was really fun, I appreciated it much more than I thought I would to be honest and it wasn't even the VVC engined one. I'd have another in a heartbeat. Not really retro or desirable per say but if you put your inhibitions behind you, there's fun to be had.

MK2 MR2 has a decent (for a sports car) sized boot, in budget as well - but avoid Rev1's, they will try to kill you... Small tank and rubbish on fuel isnt helpful though, neither is there want to try and kill you (I had a Rev1, can you tell lol)

Remember that many rotted out before their 10th birthday! While underseal etc. will help IMO it is inevitable that they will succomb to the tinworm. Even my RST was beginning to go a little in some areas and that was an undersealed/rebuilt from the shell up resto!
