So it looks like I'm going to have to sell off some precious assets to raise the funds for a sheet of 3mm PALight. What size do you need as we have offcuts at work? It's a lovely offer, but aren't you holed up in deepest North Northshireside? It would cost me, or you, more to send it to me than it would for me to just click re-order on the Trent Plastics website. I can do that. I can re-order some more... But I'm actually an obsessive bodger and much prefer the challenge of using my wits and cunning to get around these sorts of obstacles. I have found one 2" slither of the right length of PALight, so I'm going to invent a rationale for the roof-lining to require one 2" wide band somewhere in the overall pattern. I will probably affix something to it, purely to create the illusion of justification. It's how I roll. As an example of my bodgerific resourcefulness, I need a new gearstick cover and handbrake cover now I've got a centre console. I found some cheap-as-chips universal pieces on ebay and bought them, before realising I had been duped by a Chinese trader masquerading as a GREAT BRITISH VENDOR. As a result the promised delivery date is mid-April, which is Chinese trader-speak for 2023. I can't wait that long. I'm in serious obssesive-compulsive mode on my car. So I've had a rumble around the cupboard under the stairs and my wife has (hopefully) forgotten about a Donna Karen rain mac she once loved, which is now crumpled up under the mop bucket. It's black. It's very nice material. By tomorrow night I'll be the only Scimitar driver with Donna Karen "Sheaths" ... ahem ... on my "tackle"... ahem ahem. By Winter, I'll be single. I've still not been forgiven for repurposing a much loved yoga mat as material for my rear light gaskets almost two years ago. I could tell she never used that end of the yoga matt - it was pristine - so I couldn't see what all the fuss was about.

just about drives one to lunacy trying to cut a 7 ft long bonnet edge with a 115mm cutting disc and get a straight line...ish ! Pffft. Amateur. You know what I'd be doing that with? A SCALPEL. I CUT MY METALS WITH A SCALPEL. ON THE KITCHEN TABLE. IT TAKES ME DAYS JUST TO COMPLETE ONE CUT. True Story.

So anyway, everyone stop messing about. What do you think of my roof-lining thing. Is it stupid? Does it look ridiculous?
It's not bolted down and finished yet obviously... but in theory, does it look okay or really stupid?
Be honest. Keep in mind that everyone said my rear lights looked stupid but I really like them... so I'm only really gauging opinions and I wont be upset.

Yeah, that's what I like about it. It's got a no fuss ultilitarian feel and also feels quite protective (despite not being even remotely protective). I've just solved the PALight shortage. Added a narrower slat at the back, reversed the lapping order of each board. It looks pretty good. Can't get a decent picture of it though with my crappy phone. Still not fixed into place as I need to do the windscreen rubber first. There's one bolt at the back onto which I'm going to reposition the rear light - which amazingly still works but the switch mechanism needs fixing. So I'll end up with an armadillo roof and a cabin light. ZING! and Donna Karen tackle sheaths ZING! ZING! === I want this SOOOO BAAAADDD.... r.ebay.com/YynKHJIt's absolutely mint. Shame it's the slant Vauxhall CF not a CIH2.0 CF2, but I guess I could live with that apart from the fact that the rocker cover can never ever be sealed on these engines. Starting bid just shy of £3k. Could go for a good price, but it's more than I can afford, and running a commercial van as a private vehicle became a PITB in my experience. Insurance quotes were up in the thousands unless I pretended I was converting mine into a camper... which I never wanted to do so each insurance renewal became increasingly awkward. Then there's the road tax, and now we have a residents parking scheme which means you can't park a commercial van on the road unless you have a trader's permit. So my work van days are behind me as a result.

Tackle sheaths.... I switched brands. Didn't dare cut up the wife's Donna Karen mac. Then I remembered I still have a super enormous Ralph Lauren puffer coat that I bought in 1990 when I spent my first student grant on a ticket to New York and flew there in December in a vintage tee-shirt with no luggage. I almost died. It was -400º and there was 4ft of snow. So I had to buy a coat. It was the biggest puffiest puffer coat in the world. People used to laugh at me when I wore it. I looked like the Michelin man. It's still hanging around 30 years later and my wife hates it, so I decided it has a better fabric, and it needs to vacate the cupboard under the stairs where it takes up most of the space. So I cut the sleeve off to start to fashion a gear stick cover. I probably should have remembered it was full of duck down before I started chopping it up. As for the gear stick cover... possibly a little bit puffy ?... It looks like an S&M version of one of those toilet roll dolls people used to have in the 70's. You don't get this superlative level of craftsmanship in Grumpy or Blackpop's threads, that's for sure. They're probably watching, taking notes, humbled into silence. I get it. It can be intimidating. Just do what you can and try to keep up. EHHHHH Emergency update.... Maybe I'll just fettle these Chinese fake leather items that JUST CAME THROUGH MY DOOR SHORTLY AFTER I TOOK THE PAINFUL DECISION TO HACK THE ARM OF MY BELOVED PUFFER COAT. Thanks China. You are nothing if not entirely unpredictable.

Hahaha, yeah, I was desperately trying to convince myself it looked like something of that nature. Truth is it looked ruddy awful ... but I did plan on cutting and sewing it into shape before attaching it.

Armadillo? I reckon that roofliner's pure pangolin. Altogether a much higher class of scaly insectivore Puffer coat gearstick bag is awesome

Tomorrow's jobs, weather permitting... I'm going to take off the weird scoop thing nailed to my car's chin tomorrow. I think it's a Triumph Dolomite add-on but I'm not sure. It looks rubbish, and I've just lived with it without really thinking about it. I'm either going to take it off, decide I like it off, and then leave it off... or I'm going to carve it up a bit and change the shape of it. Also, when I first got the car it had no grill on the front. I liked it. It just had holes drilled into the bodywork there. Unfortunately they had been drilled during a drunken game of 'drill the tail on the donkey' by a man wearing rollerskates for the first time. They were all over the place, and it really bothered me. So as a cheap fix I covered them up with some of Halfords premium range sports car mesh (I went for the lowest power rated mesh giving me an additional 50bhp as I already have 680bhp). So I'm going to rip that mesh off again, and make my own grill panel that has the appearance of holes but equal sized and nicely spaced. They'll just be blind holes not going anywhere, but at least my car will look a bit gnarly again rather than like something you might cook sausages on. Original gnarly, but drunken rollerdisco holes... My Halfords mesh accidentally on display at a classic car show last summer when I thought I was being directed into the car park until I realised I was being directed to park my pile of junk next to a concourse Scimitar. Thanks Halfords. Possible shape I might cut into my chin strap, and the Halfords mesh cunningly concealed behind some Powerpoint rectangles.

holes to cool the spare wheel are a popular mod but totally muck up the underbonnet airflow - and probably actually reduce airflow through the rad (which is possibly why you have the popular added dolly spoiler)

holes to cool the spare wheel are a popular mod but totally muck up the underbonnet airflow - and probably actually reduce airflow through the rad (which is possibly why you have the popular added dolly spoiler) Yes, this was learned early on on Scimweb thanks to yourself, Phil and Roger and it was good to know. I blocked my holes up behind the mesh as a result. I don't want to prod the malevolent gods of fateful mayhem too much, but I seem to have a rare, well cooled and temperature-stable Scimitar ever since I managed to stop all the hose joint leaks it came to me with. As for the spoiler... I've left it there this long purely because I felt it added the very vaguest of nods towards a nice chin spoiler that hopefully made the car look more like a feisty blighter. The delusion has since worn off and I can;t wait to get rid of it now. I am quite taken with the cut-away look of it though so if my car looks better without it and I therefore have nothing to lose, I'll be taking my hacksaw and scalpel to it in the morning. By the way, did you see I've been forced to sell my watercolour entitled "8ball on the beach at sunset"? Edit: Her eit is in case you missed it amongst the pages of drivel I type....

I was wondering about trying to find a dolly chin spoiler for my Scimitar but looking at yours it doesn't quite look wide enough in standard trim.

I was wondering about trying to find a dolly chin spoiler for my Scimitar but looking at yours it doesn't quite look wide enough in standard trim. It really isn't wide enough at all. It looks pretty stupid if you stop and look at it long enough... Like maybe with a cup of coffee and one of those folding chairs. I don't even know for sure it's a Dolly spoiler. I've just guessed it is because they tend to be slapped on SE5s frequently. It's so narrow it could be for a mini for all I know. Actually it's so narrow it might even be off a Raleigh Grifter.

I doubt I could afford it, but I will say this *cough* even I'd do a better job of fixing it on than that *cough*, you give bodging a bad name. Nobody uses masking tape for structural stuff like that, get the hell off my thread you lousy amateur. Folks, don't be like Jim. Be like me and do things properly with sachets of Sugru mouldable plastic.

Your existing spoiler looks very Golf mk1 GTI' Bingo! That looks remarkably like the fella. Hmmm, I'd better check it's not worth billions before I start hacking at it I guess. I wouldn't want to be guilty of destroying a rare item. *leaves* *googles* *returns* Welp, there only seem to be tens of thousands of them left, each retailing at around £28... so I think I'll get my scalpels out.

Hmm, not convinced by the proposed chin spoiler butchery. Might look a bit like Ming the Mercilesses's'es beard.
Perhaps you could work things out by growing and shaping your own facial topiary first. Or if there's no time for that head out to the bars and loitering places of those persons sporting suitable jaw crops and offer a free style and shape. Might help you figure out just what look you are going for.
As for the one posted by Jim, the bottom LH corner sports a graphic that looks very much like 1980's TRANS AM subtlety.
Keep up the thread rambling. Just distracted myself from work chuckling catching up on this for much too long this morning.
Oh yes. The slatted armadillo roof lining. I have not been to the Sydney Opera House. But I dearly hope it is similar inside, maybe in the janitors bathroom at least.
