I think these are wonderful cars - but was always put off by the talk of the front wings being Ā£2k a side or something for new ones? A friend had one new in 85/86 and it was epic then (and probably still is now!). Well done on sinking a mortgage into bringing it back to A1!

Yeah I think new front wings are something like Ā£800 each. Luckily they are spotless on mine - this car is crusty underneath although oddly enough, according to the garage, the horrible repairs of the last decade have to some degree slowed down the decay. It is definitely one to save.
It's a lesson to all. Luckily I didn't pay a fortune for the car but I reckon most 6 series have had or require substantial metalwork at some stage. When you see how the prices are escalating - it makes sense to buy very cautiously. Most of what I have shown in the photos was hidden...

Ive seen the results of caulked patches and rivets, expandable foam filler, welded layered up metal, and bondo and fiberglass replacing structural metal......it all adds to more rot than was there in the first place. (unless the patch somehow stayed perfectly intact)
As sarkie83 says, embrace the crisis. It sounds like you were ready for the rot to appear once you began poking around.
My e91 is showing signs of corrosion here and there, which I try to stay on top of every year...but it aint easy. (just stripped, rust converted, repainted and undercoated part of the chassis that was showing its age. not quite retro, but its 10 years old now....)
I have always loved the 635 and think your car is worth every effort. great find and best of luck in your journey!

Nice! I'm restoring one, too, in a very similar configuration to yours in all but engine! Mines "Only" a 628, but that makes it quite rare! These are one of the best looking cars BMW ever made, definitely worth the effort, Get stuck in

Yes that must be rare - I didn't realise the carried the 2.8 engine across to the later model.

Well, itās finished! At least to the point of looking good, being drivable and reliable. Iām still finishing the interior and working on research for some stereo / tech upgrades. To recap - I bought a ācheapā MOTād rolling project, knowing it needed work but was in generally good shape. Took it off the road Feb 2018 and began the teardown review of work needed. It was awful under the skin - full of holes and bad repairs. New floors new sills, extensive rear 3/4 panel repairs, lots of new metal - no more filler! Extensive inner wing rebuild. Full respray. Full suspension and brakes overhaul, H&R lowered suspension. Tidied up the electrics. Removed and replaced all old insulation and sound deadening. Mechanical refresh, new cooling system incl heater matrix. Full stainless manifold and exhaust. Replaced the fake Alpinas with dished genuine 9J x17 Iām really happy with the outcome. It drives really well - everyone should upgrade the M30 to a manual box - completely different car now. Interior is a mix of original and new Highline parts, so extended leather consoles, dash and headlining all in leather. Hereās the finished car!

Very well done ....It looks fantastic and I'll bet your a happy man. With all that expensive work done I'd flood all the cavities with a rustproofer of your choice , I'd still recommend fitting the Lokari liners they won't be affected by the ride height change . Enjoy it now.

I have recently purchased 85 635 manual, and your moto looks amazing I hope to do my the same justices, however Iām in need of parts mainly body panels, front wings, rear inner / outer arches and sills plus more as and when I start to strip back the panels.
Any useful links to breakers part suppliers would be helpful
Enjoy and stay safe

No such luck for my XJ40. Love an E28 though. Dead jealous
