I'm sure someone's been through this scenario before?
I've bought a car that's been registered on a W-plate (ABC123W format) but its MOT history says the correct 1976 and I'm assuming the v5 (when I pick up the car) will say so too.
So, would it be possible to get an age related plate from the dvla without the car having an mot as its a long way off getting one.
Thanks

No you'll have to wait to get it MOTd then you used to take your proof of age to the local VRO, you will need something from an approved club etc stating the age, they won't take their own records ie date of manufacture on logbook as a proof of age in my experience..

Sorry still a bit confused.... How can it be a 1976 car with a W reg as you're not allowed to make a car appear newer than its actual age?

If it can be fixed with a hammer, then it must be an electrical fault

Possibly built in 76 but not registered until 1980?

back in the day if it was an import with no proof of age, they just banged it on a new reg. they stopped doing that when Q plates came about, and put it on a Q instead.
it really is/was quite common, ive got a 65 mustang in at the moment thats registered on an S suffix, so 1975-ish, when it was imported.

It's always something I've seen as a nice little quirk of a vehicles history.
I once had a chap with an immaculate old Land Rover fire engine who wanted to put an 'age related' number on it.
The truck in question had been a works fire engine for somewhere or other and had been registered as new when it was required to be used on the road going between company sites.
The plate that was on it was the only one that had ever been on the vehicle, and to my mind it was more authentic with that than anything else the DVLA might have issued for it.
Slightly different case if a vehicle has lost its original plate as someone thought it 'desirable' enough to keep, but at the end of the day it's an identifying mark for the officialdom, not something that really bothers me so long as the information that pertains to it is accurate.

Yeah I agree with daslandroverman and think its quite a cool little quirk to have and would leave it be! Makes people look twice! I have a car that was no longer available after 02 but is on an 03 plate long after the replacement was released! Always gets questioned lol!!

I had a 64 Volvo 122S Estate, sold new in France in November 64 but not registered in England till it was imported in 68 and given the then current F registration. The practice stopped with the introduction of the A prefix on August 1st 1983 when age related plates were introduced.
I know this exactly cos my trader boss at the time got mugged by his own greed. He had bought 3 matching black ex military Ford Cortinas, 2 perfect and one slightly damaged, this would have been about May of 83. The 2 perfect ones, he fitted with the limited edition "Crusader" stripes, registered them on Y plates and retailed them. The damaged one he got repaired and the stripes done, but by then it was late July and he decided to delay registering it till August 1st so as to get an A prefix. You can imagine his language when he came back from the LVLO (remember those?) with an age related T plate!
