Just wondering if anyone can help? I ve been to the Iveco Forums but I m not having much luck there,
Basically I have a 1993 Iveco Turbo Daily 45-10, that I want to convert into a campervan, but its blowing excess blue smoke, and I ve been advised I need a new engine, I m having trouble sourcing an engine, I have a mechanic who is willing to do the swap for me, but I wanted to know if I could find and fit a 2.8 engine that would be a straight swap, From what I ve found out so far I believe this can be done with minimal work, but I need to find the right engine, or even someone who can do a conversion for me, my mechanic didn't seem overly keen.
Fingers crossed someone here is in the know and can point me in the right direction,
I m based in Fareham, near Portsmouth in Hampshire, so if thats any help.

Sorry I should've said, its a 2.5TD lump at the moment, does feel a but underpowered so a 2.8 would be great, I ve found one on ebay from a 2001 Iveco Daily (2.8 non turbo) thats covered 81000 miles just not sure if its the same block as what I have

Could do with a bit more info, but that replacement engine looks like the later type to me. I have swapped iveco engines a bit, the issues ive found are, and this was a few years back.... The 2.5 and 2.8 possibly have a slightly different bellhousing, so you might be better buying an engine and box Yours is the earlier type engine, so if you change box make sure its got the riht speedo pickup, electric versus cable. There are less ivecos round these days, but possibly buying another complete donor cheap would be an idea, thdy are much better turbo than na
Back to work now, i'll post some more info later

Almost on the road: b11 sunny breadvan, e36 tds, 325i skidcar,
nearly there: ford f250 tathauler, suzuki alto, u11 bluey
not for a while: ford pop, 32 rails,
not in this lifetime: ruby, '29 hillman

Just found engine code, 8140.27s also had a quick look at the turbo while I was there and found loads of oil in the turbo outlet pipe, is this normal? Or is that just confirmation of piston rings / valve seals

Heres some pics of the turbo ![](http://i63.tinypic.com/svqfpu.jpg) ![](http://i66.tinypic.com/2r7sk0h.jpg) My thoughts are its on its way out but its not the cause of the billowing white/blue smoke

Hi,Yes blue smoke is oil burning. The white smoke is unburnt fuel from either the engine running colder than necessary or injector problem. However the two together indicates it could be the rings, low compression so not enough heat and passing oil.

Its looking more and more like piston rings which is a shame, so now I just need to find a 8140.27S or a 2.8 that will fit.

Does it start easily from cold? If it does it's unlikely to be engine wear, if you pull the oil filler cap off while the engine is running does it blow out loads of air/ oil vapour. A failed turbo bearing would make it smoke.

the inlet/exhaust sytem is a lot different turbo/non turbo, and also a lot different between intercooled and non intercooled models. other than that, theres nothing that i know of to differentiate them, other than the speedo difference kev mentioned. i think the tacho drive is different too.

I think I m right in saying that the 8140.23S 2.8l lump is the way to go, with a gearbox, if Kev can confirm the gearbox from my existing 2.5 won't fit the 2.8 block?

A failed turbo bearing would make it smoke. It start on the button, no problems starting from cold at all, I ran the turbo with the hoses off today and couldn't see anything spraying anywhere, although it must be letting a little bit of oil past as the outlet hose is pretty caked in oil, there is lots of smoke from the exhaust, none at idle, all when its underload, my mechanic said he saw it when changing down the gears too. Sad thing is when I picked the van up there was no smoke at all, its only been since it when in for Mot that's its been like this, I understand these things just go, just pee's me off as I thought it was a good engine, I would never have bought it if I knew the engine was trash

They don't just suddenly go from engine is fine and no smoke to engine is worn out and lots of smoke. If it starts ok then I would say it either has pump or injector problems, did the MOT place change the pump settings to get it through a smoke test? kevfromwales or Dez could the pump timing have jumped a tooth?

All the MOT place did was a pre-mot, to class 4 standard, it class 7 as it stands, I just wanted to know what I m up against, which other than this engine is very little, a few patches of welding, a few bulbs, brakes and a track rod end, I m not ready to give up on this yet, and if I have to I ll change the engine, but if this one is saveable it will make my life a whole lot easier and leave me more money for the rest of the project.

If it's a camper it's a class 4 mot, it may be worth giving it a good service with clean oil and air/ fuel filters stick a can of Forte diesel injector cleaner into the fuel filter if you can before refitting it.
