Hi folks
I need to check how a kit car is registered... I have the registration, but it's been off the road for so long it's not on the DVLA database. The age means it could be registered as the donor or a new build, which is a potential deal breaker on a purchase
Is there anywhere I can find out what it's registered as from the reg alone?
Many thanks
Tony

Do you have access to the log book? If it isn't on the dvla system it's probably not registered at all, I've had stuff that hasn't been taxed since it was new in 82 and they've still been on the system, the only ones of mine I can remember that aren't on the system have been logged as scrap.

No, no logbook yet. The main reason I need to know how it's registered is to apply for it. I have the reg and chassis number, but need the recorded manufacturer for the V62.
Some more background: The car was donated to a club I help with, the PO couldn't find the V5. We're now looking to get it MOTed etc. but I'm aware that an incorrectly registered kit car is almost worthless...
If I apply for the V5 with the wrong details on the form, what happens?

loads of apps as i mentioned, all you need is the reg, its free and brings up any details recorded for it like make model capacity, on newer vehicles it tells you bhp and co2.
feel free to pm me the reg if you don't want to post it.

Go to ebay and start to sell a car, add the reg into the sale page and click show details and you get whatever DVLA have on the vehical, easy and free but you need to have an ebay account to do it.

unfortunately thats what my app said for the supplied registration number, so it hasn't been on the dvla computer. not sure what other records the dvla will have.

Yeah, I've tried the DVLA vehicle enquiry (and most other online tools) with different manufacturer names and repeatedly had "not listed" as a response.
My main hope relies on the fact it's a 1980 W-reg using Triumph parts, so in theory could be a late, late Spitfire. However, it's been built using mostly Vitesse parts and has a swing axle, which makes the donor much earlier. Therefore it's more likely to be a new registration as the chassis number also dates it as 1980.
Current plan is to submit a V62 with the details as I have them, hope they have a paper record on file down the back of the sofa and cross my fingers...

Hi, AFAIK at that time the way it was normally done was to throw the kit together as cheaply as possible, register it, pay the taxes on the cost of the kit and donor car/parts used. Then go strip and rebuild it with all your new/shiny/better bits. So I would think you need to know the name of the make/model of the kit it was registered under. Colin P.S. Have you tried this site which just requires the reg number and gives you the make in the result. - www.cartell.ie/

1980 should be on the computer system, assuming it was on the road at some point. The 80 reg is a good sign IMO a kit being registered at that point would get a new current reg number. What type of chassis number is it? If it's plainly correct and legible then you could possibly run a HPI check on the chassis number to see if it comes up with the reg? Could the number plate be the wrong one or damaged?

When I was looking into problems I had with my kit car I found the AA reg checker system brought up make and model from just the reg number and was more accurate than a lot of others I tried. You could also try car parts websites such as Eurocarparts.
Are there any tax discs with the car ?
Sometimes an owners club will have records of cars built maybe even pictures.

If it's a Dutton then PM me the details and i'll see what i've got on file. Club records go back to 1980 but older cars are recorded on there as well (just not all cars were recorded as people often didn't fill in donor details)
