Hi guys,
I have recently thought that i would actually quite like a mini but know nothing about them. So i have a few questions.
Can they be had for less than a grand? I say that because if they cant I will get an mx5 instead as i don't really want to spend anymore than that and i love the 5. I want to obviously spend as little as possible but i woukd like to see myself between 600-800. If they can be had what model should I look for? I am not bothered about styling i just want a fun little drivers car.
Cheers Tom

How much work do you want to do on it? Cars with MOT generally start at over £1K nowadays.
I can probably advise you on what to look out for if you decide you want to spend, I've had a fair few and my current one for 11 years!

TBH at 600-800 it will need a fair bit of work . Most likely rusty sills , floor etc . I think body work will be your biggest worry , the mechanics will not cost much . You have to look for rust around the headlights and windscreen , sills , rear panel behind the boot and where the trailng arms thatare bolted to the body/subrame just ahead of the rear wheels . Also they have big storage bins inside at the back , you can pull the cardboard trim up to see if they are rusty below there . Same with the back seat , pull that off and look under there , then under the metal shelf the seat sits on . Pull the carpets up front and rear and have a good look . And the front and rear subframes . Basically rust everywhere . You could get a project one for that , but it may not be complete and may have dubious welding repairs . A good bet is to google your local mini club and ask them . You may get someone who will let you have a mini for less than the going rate if you are genuinely enthusiastic . A mx-5 might be less hassle but a lot of those are rusty as well . At least you can still get lots of good bits for minis at reasonable prices , bits of trim , chrome grills , carbs etc for less than £30 a pop secondhand .
