Up for sale is my little MX5 1.6 Turbo. Bought as a fun weekend car, it's now served it's purpose and it needs a new home. A perfect weekend toy, or track day weapon, it's suitable for everyone.
Whilst not as popular as the MK1 MX5, the MK2 benefits from many detail body and mechanical changes, and is quite simply a better put together car. This one is no exception. It's a 1999 1.6, that at some point in it's life has had a Turbo conversion. This boosts the power up to between 170-180BHP, and with a little more development, it could easily be around 200. The power and tourque delivery is really impressive, and combined with the MX5's already good handling, and this cars imporved drilled and grooved discs and EBC pads, it's a real drivers car. On the road it feels really good. It's fast, agile and quite unlike a "standard" MX5. The wastegate chatter is addictive!
The turbo conversion has been done well, but is very much a DIY build. It's a TD04 water and oil cooled turbo on a home made manifold. there is a rising rate fuel pump and a decent sized well mounted front mount intercooler. A boost guage is in one of the air vents on the dash to keep an eye on things. It's curently running around 5psi of boost, not too much but good for reliable power. A decent mappable ECU would really give you some more gains.
Mechanically its really good, no rattle on cold start up, brilliant oil pressure and coolant temperature. The uprated brakes work well, and the gearbox changes like only an MX5 can. The suspension is free from rattles and all appears good.
The interior is a really nice place to be, very little wear anywhere really, and everything works as it should. I've swapped the standard wheel for a very rare and desirable NARDI one, unfortunately this means the airbag light flashes occasionally. There is a mod to turn this off, and it's quite simple to do...It's just never bothered me.
Bodywork, like a lot of MX5's is what lets this car down. Although not an MOT failure, both rear arches have started to bubble up, and there is a bubble on the front O/S arch too. The passenger door and wing has a shallow dent, and there are stonechips/light scratches around as you would expect. I'm sure you'll agree looking at the pictures, it does clean up well and look presentable.
It's had Import sized front and rear plates, legally tinted back lights, aftermarket (but not too big/wide) wheels fitted with new Toyo Proxes on the back, and a Garage Vary front lip.
Overall its a cool, fast, fun MX5 that can be driven and enjoyed immediately.
