An evolutionary Ferrari Dino 308GT4 with an impeccable history file
EQUIPMENT
Tubular frame chassis, steel bodyshell, retractable headlight pods, chrome-edged bumpers, front and rear opening panels, ‘cavallino rampante’ and Dino badging, iodine fog lights, power windows, twin Fiamm horns, lockable glovebox, full Veglia Borletti instruments, tell-tale warning lamps, intermittent wipers, Momo steering wheel, front and rear ashtrays. Factory Options: Air conditioning.
EXTERIOR
Edgy, modernist styling from Bertone is handsome and distinctive and was led by legendary designer Marcello Gandini, the genius behind Lamborghini’s Muira and the outrageous Countach. A departure from the elegant Pininfarina designs and still debated to this day there is no mistaking this 308GT4 finished in stunning Rosso Corsa. In 2011 Furlonger workshops carried out a minor restoration on the car preserving a lot of the original features but refreshing the paintwork from a well documented colour change. Fabulous in every respect and a testament to its exemplary condition is a seven page feature in Classic & Sports Car from November 2012, a copy of which remains with the car.
INTERIOR
Optional black full leather seat facings in this 308GT4 are in excellent condition along with the contrasting Bordeaux carpeting. Some minor wear to the clean carpets and piping do not detract from the impressive cockpit. Seven Veglia Borletti instruments bearing a Dino script logo work perfectly along with all the attractive chrome sliders and switch gear. The three brushed aluminium dash panels angled towards the driver are simply automotive art and the Momo leather-rimmed steering wheel with the circular horn push proudly displaying the ‘cavallino rampante’ reminds the driver how special this car is. Often missing items such as the seat belt clip to assist access to the rear proves the originality. Sculpted rear seats with head restraints and seatbelts offers practically as does the deep luggage area still carpeted in the original heavy-duty hessian style weave.
ENGINE & TRANSMISSION
The first car to receive the excellent V8 powerplant was the Ferrari 308GT4. Incredibly and until the 1980’s each engine was assembled by a single engine builder and this mid-mounted V8 is fed by four Weber 40 DCNF carburettors producing an exhilarating induction note. 255bhp and 283Nm of torque is enough to propel this car to 60mph in 6.2 secs and on to a top speed of 155mph. Regular documented servicing ensures excellent reliability and performance. The last service at Furlonger was on the 8th August 2016 and cost £800.77. The 5-speed gearbox with a single plate dry clutch is controlled perfectly through the Ferrari open-gated gearshift selector.
WHEELS, TYRES & BRAKES
Ferrari 16'' Speedline light alloy wheels are shod in premium and matching Goodyear 205/55 R16 front and 225/50 R16 rear tyres with ample tread. The effective braking system comprises of four-wheel ventilated disc brakes with a Bonaldi vacuum servo on a dual circuit. Still impressive to this day and bringing the Ferrari to a rapid halt.
HISTORY FILE
From a total production of just 2826 only 587 were RHD models. This late Series 2 example was registered on the 21st December 1978 by UK authorised Ferrari Main Agents, Cooper Car Sales Ltd Leicester. The first owner, Mr William Monks of the Monks Group Builders Merchants, repurchased the car from the second owner after regretting the sale! Since then a further five custodians have cherished the car with the fourth, David Taylor, acquiring the vehicle in 1983 and owning for 26 years only relinquishing on his death in 2009. During his lengthy ownership he had the car fully restored by Dorchester Auto Engineering and a detailed summary of the work undertaken, can be found in the comprehensive history file. The current owner, Mr Parmenter, purchased the vehicle from Ferrari specialists, Furlonger, who know the car intimately having sold it on two prior occasions and being responsible for its routine servicing and belt changes along with Foskers, the UK's oldest independent Ferrari specialist. Mr Parmenter’s fixation with historical content includes correspondence with prior owners, a full comprehensive breakdown together with supporting invoices and bills of expenditure year on year from 1983 to current day. This car also features in his book, ‘My Half Century Love of the Motor Car 1965 – 2015’. All handbooks, service books, spare keys and manuals are present. A magazine feature is also included along with an original sales brochure. A video of the car on the YouTube Channel, Seen Through Glass, can be viewed HERE at 5.35min.
