Model- Mercedes-Benz 190e LE 1.8 Automatic
Year- 1993
Mileage- 111,000
MOT- June 2017
Price- £1600 (may swap)
Bit of background on this motor. It's an LE (Limited Edition) which were available in three colours only; Azzuro Blue (blue/purple), Brilliant Silver and Rosso Red (Burgundy). The Azzuro blue coloured cars came with a grey checked cloth interior, the silver ones with black checked cloth and the Rosso Red with biscuit/cream checked cloth.
This is finished in Azzuro Blue (aka Avantgarde blue) and also has the standard 8-hole alloy wheels. There are 2 keys.
The interior is excellent. The upholstery is like new.
It also has 4 electric windows, electric tilt/slide sunroof and Walnut trim. Again, this spec was only available on the LE.
EVERYTHING WORKS.
It is completely standard apart from the Haslback boot spoiler. I removed the LE badge from the boot as it had gone white and looked awful.
I bought this off a fella in Brum last March who'd in turn bought it off an elderly gentleman on Ebay who had owned the car for 14 years and had obviously looked after it.
When I first bought the car, it had a few issues- creaking balljoints and a petrol leak to name two. The leak just turned out to be perished copper washers and the balljoints were replaced (these can be serious as if they snap, the suspension collapses) I then had a 4-wheel alignment with all the tracking and camber sorted at a local specialist.
I also had the windscreen replaced before the MOT as it had two large chips and a crack. I also replaced the O/S rear window mechanism and motor as it wasn't working.
I then serviced it with new plugs, 10w40 oil, oil, air and fuel filters and spark plugs. It sailed through the MOT with no problems at all.
Over the last 18 months in my ownership it's had-
Fresh diff oil and gearbox oil & filter change.
New tappets at the second oil change this year (it was tappy at various times and wasn't getting any better)
Upgraded metal thermostat housing & gasket from Merc (the original plastic one is poo)
4 new tyres.
New leads.
Dizzy cap & rotor arm.
New blower motor (old one was seizing up and blowing the fuse)
A few weeks ago it passed the MOT again with two advisories. One was a slightly corroded rear brake pipe but this was sorted by cleaning it up and greasing it. It wasn't pitted or anything (bit harsh IMO)
Second was that it just about passed the emissions. Just days before the MOT (sod's law) it had developed a slight misfire at idle (hence the leads, dizzy cap & rotor arm change) it passed the MOT but the misfire continued.
The misfire turned out to be a failed spark plug! I'd overlooked the plugs as they were only just over 12 months old. The porcelain insulation had cracked on one (they were Denso plugs BTW) I replaced all 4 plugs with NGK non-resistor plugs. It runs perfectly now with no issues whatsoever.
This really is in excellent condition and drives beautifully for a 23 year-old motor. I use it daily for work and it never misses a beat. Me & my family have been on holiday to Cornwall and Great Yarmouth in it with no issues (did Great Yarmouth on half a tank) It has E and S modes (economy and standard I think?)
It's not fast but it wasn't built for that. It's comfortable, looks the dogs and has "presence". I think these were some of the last "built like a tank" Mercs to be made. It has all the original manuals etc including a map and other bits and bobs. It has some documented history and a load of receipts for past work and old MOTs all the way back to 1999.
I don't think I've missed anything out.
I'm looking for £1600 or maybe a swap for a large retro saloon or 4x4. It must be of similar age for insurance purposes.
I'm located in between Wolverhampton and Wednesbury in the Black Country (about 10 minutes from M6 J10)
