Things seem to have returned to relative normality after a busy few weeks so some workshop time actually happened... well in amongst fixing the roof and having a general tidy as interlopers had started to encroach somewhat First job was to assess the coffee table... no really Reason being is that it may be needed in the not too distant future instead of the real thing, more on that in due course however... Main job for the weekend, after digging it out of storage at the last visit, was to sort this Yup, one fully complete MGB front crossmember. Now while I rebuilt it previously (I hate to think how long ago now), it was starting to look a bit ropey in places having been left in the corner of a damp barn, I'll also be upgrading a few bits as part of the V8 conversion However, before I could get to that, the workhorse needed some tlc in the braking department (anyone spot the comedy replacement wheels? They're for another project however) Foiled by the caliper bolts, I could only really change the pads rather than discs and pads which is what I wanted to do, so decided that would wait for another day when I could get to it with the impact gun. Back to the front crossmember then Thankfully as we weren't talking decades since it was last put together, it all came apart relatively easily. It was soon time for the exciting bit (ratchet strap duly utilised to stop the spring firing everything into my face!) Crossmember was soon stripped of all the ancillary parts Although I wirewheeled this clean the last time it was rebuilt and then painted with a healthy dose of frost's chassis black, it was still starting to rust under the paint Nothing for it then but to break out the wire wheel again Before a healthy coat of hydrate 80 which soon started to cure however knowing I was coming back the next day I left it the full 24 hours to do it's thing while I turned my attention to cleaning the springs as they weren't looking particularly great either Next day it was time for paint and while that was drying, I decided I'd have another go at the engine and in particular that troublesome allen bolt still holding the starter in, no joy in moving it again in the usual ways, so out came the hot stick Which I think I left too much of a shaft on as when trying to remove, I promptly snapped the bolt off - b*gger! Toys thrown I moved on to stripping the front of the engine instead. and due to needing to assist little bro with some furniture collecting and moving, that's where I had to leave it... more next weekend all being well. I do however have some homework with me for the eves this week - (see bottom right of the last pic)

With the Goddess, can't you just take it? Think the Low Countries a few decades ago. Once your in, it's an occupying force. If it's an occupying force you want I should have found this but sadly it turned out to be a Hungarian will-o-the-wisp discussed during an over-rich goose liver and Pálinka dinner with some arms dealers in downtown Pest.

Going with the theme of being hands on, the gloves were off last night for some 'homework' Luckily everything came apart nice and easily ready for a refresh. More boxes due to arrive in the next day or so, time for me to go and hide! 🙈 Also expecting a very important delivery from a member of this parish. Particularly as it will set the tone for a number of bits for the build 😂😂

A rather rubbish week at work has thankfully been made a lot better by some progress/exciting developments on the project front. The aforementioned delivery did indeed appear and is exactly as I hoped, not sure words can explain how long I've been over-thinking/researching to get the right fit for the 'vision', but suffice to say I'm very pleased. Anyway, the upshot is that it means a big hurdle has been crossed and the subsequent areas of procurement can now proceed. Tomorrow morning therefore is a trip to a suppliers to finish spec'ing a little addition. As if that wasn't exciting enough (I know I should get out more!), out of the blue on Thursday I received a phone call to say the rear axle was ready for collection... except it was no longer near heathrow as per the name of the company who have done the work (see earlier post). Instead it means a little roadtrip in the direction of GoodWood once more, which seeing as I'm halfway at the first stop, has worked out rather nicely

It's a tricky art as you well know. That said there have been plenty of 'reveals' already. None of which are particularly cryptic either, more hidden in plain sight 😉 As for being a little more subtle on something big soon... You tell me... But possibly 😂

Lots of miles done today but it's been a successful one First stop, the trimmers to make some decisions so the little addition I've ordered can be completed. Hopefully the right choice was made 🤞😬 Then on to Chichester to pick up the upgraded rear axle from the recently moved Heathrow transmissions Now fitted with V8 carrier, 3.07 CROWN wheel and pinion, new drive shafts, bearings and V8 drive shaft flange (no sniggering at the back!). It'll now get the same treatment as the front subframe so should be looking good as new in no time. Next challenge... Procuring the gearbox. Frustratingly that's become a saga in its own right - you'd think sales people would want to actually sell their product, instead it's like pulling teeth. Time for another call this week, thankfully I have something that I hope will convince them to finally deliver on their promises to date. We shall see...

Little bit more cleaning and treating. Not the most inspiring stuff but hoping it will pay off in the long run. Underside of subframe was first up Then the bottom arms for the spring pans Which aren't really meant to be painted, so going to have a think to see if I can protect them in another way, perhaps and oil or a wax or even clearcoat. Utility room is filling up with lots of bits in kit form... the good news is that it will soon be time to put things back together - much to her ladyship's relief! I've another parts collecting road trip planned for next Saturday, this time to Cambridgeshire and the MGOC... just a week of work to get through first however In the meantime, lets see if the email I've just sent re the gearbox has an effect. I also need to turn my thoughts to stopping...

Did someone mention stopping... Well asides SWMBO who has asked when the boxes will stop turning up when I'm at work 🤣🤣 As it happens todays delivery was all about the stopping. Despite me not planning to make the car ludicrously powerful, I did still want to upgrade a few things in the braking department given that there will be over the double century of horses under the bonnet which is a little bit more than what the 1800 lump used to deliver (and for the avoidance of doubt, they are the only type I'm happy to talk about) 😂 See where this is going... Apparently they were rather heavy 🤔🙄 Now to go with these I've been having various conversations with the lovely folk down at British classic car parts in Cornwall for a while with varying specs and options discussed. Parcel number two was therefore the exciting box... Now it may be a small detail to some, but for me the calipers form part of the overall look as well as being functional. In the end I decided that four pots were better than two, but that one of their less colourful variants would fulfill the brief as opposed to one of the fully anodised colour options. Yup, they'll do nicely 👌 The spring pan arms got another coat of hydrate 80 when I got in from work this evening, once fully cured all will get painted this week ready for the rest of the puzzle pieces to be collected this weekend so I can start to build the front subframe up again.

In other news, I've been painting bits ready for reassembly as soon as I get the next lot of parts this weekend. Tonight I've also been to see my tame tyre fitter, so probably much to the wife's annoyance, two boxes have been replaced by the previously purchased tyres fitted to the previously boxed rims. Oops! Major milestone also achieved today on the gearbox too - have finally done a deal on one, not sure when delivery will be as there are a few other bits coming with it. However it means the drive train is now all accounted for and I can focus on sorting the ancillaries.

Those calipers look quite nice, vented discs?
I've only got the very basic brake "upgrade" in my pile of parts (ebc green pads, drilled discs and braided lines) but when I get my engine plans sorted, I suspect I will need some more substantial braking performance 😂

Been reading up on your steering rack work, really useful info especially as that's another thing on my to do list at some stage.👍

Hooo - I likey - I likey a lot Some more stuff from this weekend to whet your appetite then Chris. Saturday I ventured up to the MGOC near Cambridge to have a nosey around their facilities and pick up a few things. As it happens I didn't come away with a great deal in the end for one reason or another, but more on that in a bit. Firstly met my uncle for a coffee at a nearby garden centre so we could catch up and discuss colour options 😂😂 Then it was on to MGOC HQ, where there were a couple of V8s parked in the reception The GT is a member's car, the roadster is the MGOC 'Supersports' demo, which effectively showcases a few of the additional extras you can include as part of your build. It was certainly useful to have a good look around and a sit in it to try a few things for size. I also ended up having a lengthy chat with the sales manager who spec'd the cars when they were first built in the early 2000's - a very interesting guy who has quite the collection himself, however we were so engrossed in conversation he was part of the reason I didn't come away with a great deal as the spares shop closed at 12! So what did I come away with? In the end just some new king pins with uprated roller needle bearings on an exchange basis (I took my old ones up with me) but of course that wasn't all I was hoping to pick up a few other bits that I'd ordered in the week prior to going, but as the order wasn't ready they offered to send it free of charge instead - not going to say no to that, especially as one item is due to come in a rather large wooden crate that frankly would have been a bit of a struggle getting in and out of the discovery. Talking of which, after it's motorway efforts, Sunday was back to putting it to work in a more rural setting This weekend marked 10 years since SWMBO and I got together, so it seemed fitting there was balance in helping each other out with our respective hobbies - she got me to tow the trailer about and stand in a field... and I got her cleaning car parts during a powercut 😂😂 Meaning that when we eventually got home, I could start the reassembly of the front crossmember while she watched that dancing programme on the BBC. Dining table was taken over when she was distracted... which may have included some of the recently acquired parts... Frustratingly I realised I needed a couple of the bits that were in the order I was hoping to collect so progress was curtailed a little quicker than I wanted, but should all come together over the eves this week assuming the missing bits arrive in good time. Lots to be getting on with now
