Hello everyone,
7 weeks ago I bought a 1975 Triumph Spitfire and the V5c still hasn't turned up in the post! The previous owner sent off the bottom half of the old V5 when I bought the car off of him which has left me with the top half of the old one. Should I contact the DVLA about it or should I wait another week? Advice and opinions would be appreciated.
Cheers

If you have the green slip and an invoice/receipt I wouldn't worry too much. Use the reference number on the green slip to check the car's status on the VSA site.

Oh dear....DVLA service these days is a bit of a mixed bag. You are sure the original owner has sent the thing to them aren't you? Go here: emaildvla.direct.gov.uk/ Follow through the multi-choice paths until you get to the bit for not received a V5C and it's more than 4 weeks ago. You'll get a proforma on screen to fill in the details. Do all your comms to them online so you have a record or you're probably going to get stung for a ÂŁ25 fee for a lost V5C replacement. Better make sure you're up to date on SORN too if it's needed. Having moved house I had to redo the V5Cs for my "fleet". Went AOK for first two, went pear-shaped on the last two. I sent both the last 2 V5Cs in the same envelope. Got 1 back and nothing for the other. Waited 4 weeks and then filed a missing V5C request, pointing out that I had obtained proof of posting and had got 1 back so I know they received it anyway! Got given much of a run around as it seems proof of posting is nothing more than a reassurance to you as nothing happens at their end to prove receipt. Now at one time DVLA wouldn't accept signed for/recorded delivery hence the reason I had gone for proof of posting. Luckily for me I had the indirect proof as I'd got 1 V5C back. Eventually after several emails they conceded that I could have a new V5C without having to pay their ÂŁ25 fee for a lost one (big concession since it was obvious they'd lost it). I filled in the form and sent it off, carefully addressed to the case worker/team dealing with it. Fortunately this time I'd sent it signed for as 3 weeks later I get a letter from them saying they haven't received my reply and I'm holding up them progressing the job! Instant check with the PO online showed my documents had been signed for at DVLA 2 days after I posted them. I used the email proforma again to fill DVLA in on this and finally got a kind of apologetic reply and 1 week later my (new) V5C finally turned up. I'm still not out of the woods though as I'd discovered that this particular vehicle had been registered from new with the wrong engine cc: 1657 instead of 1647 cc and I asked DVLA to amend it while doing the V5C. No chance, even though the maker never, ever fitted a 1657cc engine to this type of vehicle. They sent me the V5C still showing the wrong capacity and also sent a list of documents etc I will need to track down, or get an independent garage report duly signed off (and paid for by me) to prove the actual cc! As they say "I'm working on it!"

The old V5 for my Triumph says that its a 1296cc rather than the 1493cc and the engine number that's on the V5 and the engine block is FM which is 1493cc so I don't know whats happened there. I think I'll wait until Friday before I take some action!

Have you taxed or declared SORN yet, if not do that now and that will trigger a new V5 to be sent, as for the engine size the earlier Spits were 1500 and the later ones were 1500 its likely DVLA cockup but you need to get it changed when you have got your new V5

You won't have to pay for a new V5 because you have the green slip.

You can't sorn on the old slip- only on the new doc.
You can tax, as new owner, on the green slip, either online or at the Post Office.
That green slip will get you a free V5c in your name. Just attach it to the application ( keep a photocopy)
This happens a lot, it's just the luck of the draw.
At 7 weeks, your position, I'd apply. Using that green slip.

Cheers Now you have confused me. Unless the logbooks have changed recently (as in the past month) he should have sent off the first page leaving you with the green slip on the second page. There is no "top" or "bottom" part to it. Did he have an old V5 when he sold the car to you? As for the car I'd call the DVLA and ask them what has gone on ; you are meant to call them after not receiving the logbook after 4 weeks of owning the car. OTOH there is a chance the last owner didn't send it off. But if he just sent off the top half of the first page you well well have to get a replacement document and redo the entire process again, unless you have the green slip, in which case take it to a Post Office and request a new logbook (assuming you have the green slip (V5C/2). Do you have a copy of the V5 at all, even a photo? You can do the deeds regarding the V5 online and that way the logbook will arrive to you within a week.

Conversely, having taken ownership of a car recently and did the change of owner online, the new logbook arrived after 4 days.

You absolutely CAN SORN a car using the Green New Keepers' Slip.
It gives you an option to do so during the SORN on-line process.

Sounds to me like the seller only had the old style V5, the type from the 1990s before we went for the EU style one, as that had a tear off bottom section. But even then, he should have send off the top part. This shouldn't matter if you have a receipt, but it worries me as someone else might have the new style one (the real owner maybe) This style...

This did cross my mind, but then the new owner should have still sent off the top part as said. And yes, it could raise more questions. I'd see if you can sorn the car with the green slip just to make sure. Conversely, having taken ownership of a car recently and did the change of owner online, the new logbook arrived after 4 days. It's quick eh? The days of waiting weeks and weeks, and even more weeks are almost over. Also, the old owner and the new owner get confirmation of the sale through the DVLA as well via email.

You're right Dan, you can.
But I've had a very large percentage fail on that basis - each one needs checking after Registration is confirmed transferred

Just call them. I did it recently after not receiving a V5. They'd posted it, but read the address wrong so it hadn't got to me!

Sorry for the confusion guys but I forgot to mention that the V5 I have dates back to 1982 but today I sent off an email to the DVLA and they are going to get in contact with me soon.

I'd call them TBH! It may be a wait but you have more chance of knowing what's going on; they'll tell you within a couple of minutes of talking to someone what is going on .
