Hello,
Welcome to my advert for my Mazda MX-5 'Dakar' edition - fetchingly named 'Doris' by my girlfriend...
An introduction:
I've owned 'Doris' since October 2015, when I purchased her as a 'downgrade' whilst buying our first home - at the time, I decided that I needed to purchase a car which would be capable of putting a smile on my face; and boy, did I make the right decision.
If you're looking for an MX5, then by now you're probably well aware that they're seen as the last of the 'true roadsters', a soft-top made for the masses. 'Doris' is a Dakar edition, as such a limited edition being 1 of only 400 made. Being a Dakar edition she came with a number of extras, the fetching metallic blue paintwork, the multispoke 15 inch alloy wheels, a strut brace behind the seats, grey leather seats and a plaque bestowing her limited edition 'number'.
Doris is my 3rd MX5, owning two Mark 1's previously - there is something infectious about them, in the way that they drive. Yes, she might only have 120ish bhp from the 1.8 litre twin cam engine, but its that rear wheel drive and precision handling, with the roof down on a twisty B road on a summers evening - that is where they come into their own.
So, why am I selling such an amazing machine, do you ask? The MOT has expired, Doris requires some attention to bring her back to her prime - and my mechanical skills will unfortunately be placed behind their limits. We have our new home, I don't have a driveway/garage and need a more suitable machine for the daily drive into London - so these things coupled together, unfortunately see the end to my ownership...
What i'd like to see is 'Doris' flung into the arms of an eager new owner, someone who will use her and make the most of her - again, if you're looking for an MX5 i'm sure you're well aware that they're at their point of becoming 'cult classics'.
Good Points:
+ Reliability - in my time of ownership, Doris has had no breakdowns. Starting on the first turn of the key - even in winter - and covering a good 7,000 miles in my ownership.
+ Looks - she looks the part, tidy metallic blue, original condition with an aftermarket CD player and speakers thrown in, to boot. (fitted by previous owner)
+ History - i've seen a lot of Mk1s that are utter dogs; admittedly, Doris isn't in the best of conditions, but she has covered just shy of 92,000 miles, she comes with a folder full of history - literally full of paperwork! This includes the original sales receipt, a number of receipts for mechanical work/servicing undertaken over the years and every MOT bar one. (When I purchased Doris, I looked around before I settled - this history swung it.
Bad Points:
- There are a few, unfortunately. The main one being that Doris is an MOT failure. She failed on the following:
* Parking brake efficiency below requirements
* Side Repeaters/Fog Lights not working
* Registration plate lamp on nearside
* Front position lamp on nearside
* Sill - rear offside - outer and inner (Hole in bodywork from MOT mechanic)
* Sill - rear nearside - outer
* Brake pipes - effectively all round
* Rear Parking brake
- Grey leather seats - they're worn, the passenger seat is torn slightly but they're still serviceable and most definitely comfortable!
- Soft top roof; the zip has decided its had enough and as such the plastic window doesn't stay attached to the actual roof.
- Plastic window has a slash in it (forgot to undo the zip when it worked!)
- Nearside front wheel centre cap is missing
Misc:
So there we have it, there's 'Doris'. She needs a good home, one that will restore her to her original beauty and have some fun with her. Whilst she has her issues, don't be overcome by them - yes she needs someone who is a dab hand, or willing to pay a mechanic - but, MX5s with this sort of history, bodywork in otherwise such good condition and with such low mileage are hard to come by now...
Any questions - please feel free to message me on here and i'll do my best to answer etc.
The important bit:
Price: £450
Swaps: Depends on whats on the table
Location: Stevenage, Hertfordshire
Thanks for reading and happy Retro Rides!
