Am I right or wrong in believing that any car car at the 20 year old mark can be insured as a classic car? So as of now any 1996 car and older?

Not as simple as that. Varies with car and insurance company. Some cars seem to be able to get classic insurance earlier (15 years even) others not even at over 20 years (can't get it on my 21 yo A8 for example).

Many Classic Policies are not designed for cars in everyday use - specifically some do not cover you for commuting to and from work so worth checking this out if your classic / retro is a daily.

My 94 golf gti is insured on a classic policy for £179 fully comp,but can't use for work and limited to 5000 miles a year.

It does seem to depend a lot on the car, insurance companies seem to be wise to the kinds of cars that are going to be used at weekends and the ones that will end up being used a lot more.
Insurance is a bit crazy around me so I've looked into a classic daily estate for family duties, but although I can insure an eighties porsche for £169, the same age volvo with same usage etc comes out at more like £1000. go figure!

Depends entirely on the car. I have a 14 Year old car on a classic policy. Must have a primary vehicle insured on a normal policy though and theres a 5k limit on mileage.
