I wasn't sure if this was applicable but thought I would post it her and give it a try. My new project - So I bought this recently for a very reasonable (I now think) £200. It was sold by an old boy on my estate who told me that it had been leant to a friend who had returned it with no diesel in it. Since then he had not been able to get the van to fire up. It turns over but will not fire. Simple repair I thought but, after a few weeks of head scratching (see this post - retrorides.proboards.com/thread/189611/toyota-hiace-bleeding-diesel-system) it finally transpired that he had sold me the van with the spare key. Minus of course the transponder chip for the fuel pump immobiliser. £100 later for a new chip and she runs!!!!! Since then I have taken her for a spin and she drives really well. Very slow but very strong. This has highlighted that the radiator is stuffed. So I have removed the rad and will fit a new one next month when I get paid. Although these things are pretty basic and quite agricultural, I have struggled to find any sort of how-tos on the net. If you type in "Hiace" it just brings up loads of results for those weird looking flat fronted Japanese Hiaces. Sooo, for anybody removing a radiator from a Hiace here is a top tip!!! - The cooling fan is pretty substantial and is bolted on the end of the crank pulley. There is very little room between the fan and the radiator and you immediatly think that you will have to unbolt the fan and remove it at the same time as the radiator shrouding. Not so. The shrouding is very cleverly made in two sections and the bottom half is removable allowing you to drop the fan out from underneath.

I bought the van as a quick "fix er upper" to sell on. Ive seen them with 300k miles on ebay for £1000, and a lot seem to get exported.
But, Ive been after a van for so long and Just can not afford a VW t4 anymore (£3500 for a dog rough 1.9 non-turbo!!!) so am toying with keeping it and converting it.
The only issue for me is the engine. Yes its powerful, but it is so slow!!!!!!
A later turboed version passed me the other day and it was very fast. So I started looking at prices for the turboed engines or the cost of the necessary parts to turbo this one. Over £1200!!!!!
No way am I paying that.
So I am in need of some advice re potential engine swaps.
I have listed several option that I have considered -
Toyota Hiace turbo engine - ruled out as too expensive
Ford Transit banana engine and box - reliable but still a bit slow?
BMW 330d engine and box (and proabably rear diff) - Lots of wiring?
Mercedez sprinter engine and box- ?
And just to keep it Toyota (and because they seem to be available fairly cheaply) Lexus Ls400 v8 drivetrain - ?
Any thoughts?

Thanks. My preference is leaning towards diesel ( probably watching too much diesel brothers on sky😀)
One of the nicest cars I ever drove was a land rover discovery v6 tdi. So much power. Cant see me finding one of those going cheap though.

Is there anything you can do with the current engine to improve it?
Maybe there's an issue that's causing it to be slow rather than genuine oem slowness?

Congratulations on your Hiace. That particular model is known as "duck mouth" in Africa. They are built like tanks i know some that have 700.000 kms driven only in rough conditions. The turbos are expensive, even used ones go up to 800 euros in europe. I got also a couple of Hiaces (althoug a more recent model with the 5L engine (3 liter non turbo diesel) also slow.

Stick some nice wheels on it, drop it and just revel in the slowness.

Is it the same basic engine as the Turbo version? Meaning could you not turbo this one? Would imagine it has a fairly basic pump on it, due to age, so turbo and turn the pump up? Have zero experiance with Diesel engines but can't imagine it is that differant from Petrol.... Same premise, more fuel and air equals bigger bang! Did have a little search and found some info on the ih8mud.com site along with toyodiy.com - is it the 2 or 3L engine?. What ever, enjoy!!!! P.

Are they very similar to mitsubushi delica? Is there bits that are swappable?

The 1kz-te would be the perfect engine swap... 130bhp can run on veg all day summer and winter no problems. Its the engine I have in my van.
I agree that these vans are night and day better than the the t4's!! they look pretty cool when done right as well.
I don't think you would get the bmw or the merc engine under the bonnet as they are straight 6 engines. Your best bet is the 1kz-te it will drop straight in and wiring is minimal. Anything else will require a lot of fabrication. if you want to convert to petrol you it would be better off bying a petrol van.

What is that engine found in? I reckon the 6 cylinder motors might go in. The engine bay is pretty cavernous.
Their is a fair difference between the turbo and non-turbo engines. Cylinder heads are different for starters for compression ratios.
It needs a big old (or new) diesel unit. Have been eying up some merc sprinter engines and boxes. Been told they like to spin the main bearings though...

There is a good few Granvias over here in the UK now, as a good few have been imported as grey imports from Japan, most of them have the 3.0 TD engine. Wouldn't mind betting you could get an engine out of a breaker.
Just had a quick look on ebay, there are four being broken, none are to do with me just thought I'd mention about the 3.0 TD lump that Toyota put in the people carrier version, also they did a p.o.sher version called the Regius.

What oukie said :-) The Hilux surfs also have the 1kzte. if you found one from a surf you are more likely to find on with a manual trans. Not sure if the bell housing on your current Trans will fit the 1kz block? should be plenty of info around on the Hilux forums with what bits are compatible. Or you could go full cruiser and put the column shift auto in from the Granvia or Regius :-)

As your van has the 6 stud hubs 99% of 4x4 wheels will fit ;-) leaving you with loads of options for good quality rims... not the cheap copys you see the t4s rolling on that crack in half.

Seriously one of the most reliable vans on the road. I've had mine, a 2.5 d4d for over 4 years and costs nothing to maintain. Don't bother putting a 2.5 turbo into yours as the cost really doesn't justify the little gain in power. I often wondered if changing the gearbox to one from the minibus version would help with acceleration with the different ratios

Toyota made these with the 3RZ-FE engine. With 150HP it's not far off double the power of the NA diesel (I think you have the 80HP ish 2L that I have in my Hilux), and way more refined. There's one on ebay right now which you could haggle on as I doubt there's much of a market for them. Plus it has come out of a Hilux, so should fit yours pretty easily. You would need the loom and ECU though, not sure if they have that. www.ebay.co.uk/itm/162134131426?_trksid=p2060353.m1438.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT
