I have established that the resistor for the slow speed fan on my 2000 1.7 Puma is dead. In fact, the coiled resistance wire is fine, but there's another component in the unit - looks like it could be a diode - and that's open circuit (in both directions). Anyone know if this is actually a diode?

Assume you have the blower working on setting 4 only ?
I wasn't aware they had a diode in there,but they do have a thermal fuse i think.
On max speed the blower bypasses the resistor pack so that still works but the blown fused link stops the lower fan speeds from working.
I've heard of them being "fixed" with a jumper wire but it's a bit dodgy in my view.
The resistor pack has probably overheated due to a dry bearing on the blower fan creating a bit too much heat.
Edit .. are we talking engine cooling fan or interior blower fan ?
If its the engine cooling fan with the slow speed on A/C models then the same principle with a thermal fuse afaik.
You should be able to get a thermal fuse from Maplins or similar with the right rating.Is there a temp rating on the blown one?

If it's a little silver capsule it's a thermal fuse.
It won't have failed for no reason - usual suspects are a blocked pollen filter or a stiff motor drawing too much current but providing too little flow, so don't be tempted to just bridge it out.
You can buy replacement fuses from eBay/maplins/RS if you can decipher the value of it. They're a curse word to solder on without blowing them. I usually wind the legs into a springy coil so that you've got a couple of CM distance between your solder joint and the fuse itself, and wrap a bit of damp cloth round the fuse too.

Is the OP not referring to the radiator fan? Yeah possibly but afaik it's the same sort of set up as the blower resistor just with less resistance steps.Still has a thermal fuse. |

Is the OP not referring to the radiator fan? Thanks, yes I was - I was going to post a pic but I mistakenly deleted it and I've put the unit back in the car for now. As for reason for failure - the fan works on the higher speed, so it's hard to see what would caused the thermal fuse to fail - anyhow, thanks for the help folks. I have my fingers crossed I have located a replacement unit from a bloke in Germany. |
