Could do with ideas please, in theory (because actually doing this is naughty) if I've got a 100w linear amplifier I want to turn on when I switch my CB on, how would I go about wiring it?? I basically need a relay that will switch when it detects a current flow in the +ve to cb unit.
Looking around I can find circuits of components that will do it but surely this is a pretty standard request?

There's nothing that'll really do this off the shelf. Could you not just put them both on the same feed and have a single switch control this?
Alternatively crack open the CB and run a wire off the power switch and use that to switch a relay (use a relay with an internal diode for back EMF protection) which powers the amp.

Modify an alarm circuit - the type which is activated when it detects a door open that then switched on interior light. It'll be the very low end of the alarm market so you might find something ready made on eBay.

As cobblers said find a live on the cb and run it into a standard relay. Halfords sell a relay with diode.

Either idea above sounds fine. My hi fi has a trigger wire for the amp. Either open the cb up and solder something similar in to go live when you turn it on, or put both CB and amp on a master on/off switch. Or wait and see what the modern options are - which I guess was you original question. Errm
