Admittedly this is related to a modern but I'm sure applicable for my MX5 in the future. I need to change the front wheel bearing on my Alfa (garage wants £210 and I can get the part for £55). I'm a bit wary of being able to get the hub nut off, I'll buy the correct 36mm hub socket link and have a big breaker bar and some stainless tube to extend it. But would an impact driver be a wise buy? I'm thinking of the electric, battery/12v/240v, ones with a budget of ~£60 or are these only really useful for wheel nuts. If I'm saving £150 on a garage doing it I can invest in some appropriate tools. Something like this link at Machine Mart. Any recommendations? And based on another thread I'll be buying some Irwin sockets..

I've got that red one from machine mart and it whopped the big crank shaft nut straight off an alfa v6 easy. My Dad had my doubts (after we had used huge bars and bust stuff) and said well if it doesn't work it's going back and it took straight off

You aren't going to need an impact gun to undo the hub nut as breaker bar and brute force will be sufficient. A decent impact gun is a lot more than your saving on doing the job yourself so spend the money on decent sockets instead ?

Kielder cordless one from them direct or enay or machine mart I believe these are the ones to get. This thread convinced of that some time ago retrorides.proboards.com/thread/185997/budget-cordless-impact-wrenchFor your job though i would also suggest the breaker bar (first at least). Some hub nuts come off surprisingly easy. And those cheaper guns probably won't even be any good for wheel nuts. The best thing they can do is save time when there's a lot to do and / or the bolts have long threads edit: my experience is with cordless guns, maybe the corded ones are better. But you want to be mobile / free, right? The Kielder is the one to get

Breaker bar with a guarantee and a length of scaffold pole. Get someone to sit with a foot on the brakes and apply your weight to the scaffold pole
