1997 Volvo 940 2.3 Turbo (LPT) Estate Manual. 143,500 miles. 8 months MOT. 2 owners. £1200.
I will be extremely jealous of the person or people who buy this car. It is a car I wanted for a long time and had visions of owning for a very long time. Ownership so far has been wonderful, this car appeals to such a varied demographic; I am surprised at how many people want to talk about it or reminisce about the part a 940 has played in their life. I dare say I will look back on this sale and kick myself, perhaps buying another when they are 'classics'...
This model is one of what many call the last proper Volvos. Rear wheel drive, 4 pot turbo, tank-like build quality, square lines. I own a more modern volvo than this and there is something timeless about the set-square styling of the 940 that is just right.
The bodywork is not in perfect condition. There two main cosmetic woes are: 1) the bonnet - both missing some paint and slightly dented at the front and 2) the passenger side front wing being dented (quoted 50-70 to have it removed by paintless dent man). Accompanying these obvious gripes are various little pin-dents, bumper scrapes and small scratches. In contrast to the scratches, I have installed new tail lights and front indicators as they were crackly and dull.
The interior is largely very clean. The over mats are a little grubby (easily shampooed), the vinyl on the door cards is self-ruching, the cover for the hazard light button is missing and there is some wear to the driver side seat, as well as a small melted hole. It is opulently comfortable and a lovely place to sit. The radio is very particular about the position of the volume button but all electrics work. There are two rear-facing seats that look entirely unused.
I am being very harsh here for 2 reasons. The first is so that you don't feel I am overselling it, the second is in the vain hope of making it sound undesirable enough that nobody buys it, meaning I get to keep it!
The engine is the venerable B230FK. I have oil serviced it and had visions of really making it perfect. Included in the sale are cambelt, waterpump, tensioner, camshaft, crankshaft and intermediate shaft seals, the idle control valve, oil cap seal etc etc. This is not to say that the engine is a dog or injured; far from it. Cars are a significant hobby for my closest mates and I and we simply wanted to do it for the love of the work and for guaranteeing that there are many miles to come from this wonderful old thing.
I have, as many do, purchased a manual boost controller and a boost gauge and increased the boost to 10psi. This means that the old bus now shuffles rather well. I have hidden the boost gauge in the glove box. Achieving this was only possible by removing the very restrictive exhaust and cat. This outs the lambda light on but it doesn't bother me. This was an easy job which is just as easily undone. It us very loud at present. One friend claims it gives him a headache. Another got cheek-ache from smiling so much. Many passers-by smirk and comment on the sound. I have also installed a second rear anti roll bar which significantly improves Road holding, killing a lot of body roll. This again was an easy job, just as easily undone.
If you wish to come and see it, please contact me. If you wish to test drive it, please bring proof of insurance. If you wish to offer a 1/4 of the asking price, please save your time and mine. I have a lot of pictures of the car, do please ask for any specific ones you want.
I am asking £1200.
