Morning guy's n girl's, I wasn't going to post anything up about this build until Nigel and I had started to make some progress but chandlergti's Cushman thread has inspired me to post up the action so far..
Nigel bought the Cushman a couple of years ago, then sold it to the nursery where our workshops are.. It was used and abused and eventually abandoned when they managed to get an old Fergie tractor up and running.
At least it was left in a dry poly tunnel over winter!
Then Nigel had a Stiga mower with a shot cutting deck come in..
A plan was soon hatched.. The Stiga was converted to carry trays of pot plants..
And then traded for the Cushman..
Despite the looks the poor Cushman is suffering from lot's of rust and a very bent chassis.. So bent in fact it only had 1 inch of ground clearance!
A few specs for you... A 22hp OMC (Outboard Marine Corporation) air cooled flat twin engine.. 4 forward 1 reverse trans with Hi/Low ratios built into the diff.. PTO, hydraulics, and no working brakes
The plan? Strip the Cushman of usable parts and build a tractor around them.. (Disclaimer.. Plans may or may not change as we get into the build)
Let the tear down begin..
Tipping bed off..
A nice beefy hydraulic ram!
The front panels coming off, way more wiring than we were expecting!
The prize, well part of it... A OMC 22hp flat twin with lot's of ally for Nigel to polish
Stripping the Cushtyman has not been easy, they are very well bolted together without a captive nut in sight!
A big thanks to Rex for all your help removing the engine.
To make life easier out came the grinder to remove some "in the way" metal
"Are we sure the engine comes out through the top"?
With the aid of a forklift it did
Not what you would call a small engine, it should look good polished up sticking out each side from a Wheel Horse (maybe) bonnet
The back axle is quite a hefty bit of kit! It's quite handy the axles tubes being made out of steel as I expect the axle will get narrowed..
The lever on the diff is for hi/low ratio.. Posh eh
Here's what's left of the Cushman, it's not what you would call straight or square!
I think the chassis getting split, twisted then welded back together still twisted may of had something to do with the lack of ground clearance!!
And that's the story so far.. Quite when any more will get done I'm not sure as Nigel's busy servicing/repairing mowers and I'm rather busy with my Honda MadTrax build at the mo..
