Hi,
I recently purchased a 1975 Triumph Spitfire restoration project (project thread will be coming soon) and it has a 5 digit registration plate. The previous owner of the car said that its worth quite a bit of money. Does anybody know where I can get this valued because I'm interested in how much its worth.
Cheers

The plate is worthless until you get the car MOT'd and taxed as that is required to transfer / sell.

Elite registrations offered us £150 for our reg on my sons escort and no doubt would have sold it for over £1000!! So many plates available direct from the dvla now the one on my merc with my initials on it only cost me £250 As said you need an mot,to sell it anyway I'd keep it on the car it's part of its provenance

As per composimmonite 's comment plus when you have MOTd your car and the plate is on retention certificate ready to sell you have to compare the type of company - some will buy outright for £X and some will say it's worth £XX and will list it in their adverts for that price but take their %age out of the sale if and when it does actually sell at that price.

Hi, They have changed the rules recently around transferring reg numbers. It doesn't need to be taxed and MOTed at time of transfer only that it has been taxed within the last 12 months, is of MOTable type and that it's available for inspection. More info here - www.gov.uk/personalised-vehicle-registration-numbers/transferring-a-registration-number I wouldn't expect it to have much value because there's the transfer fee to add plus of course at the end of the day, you don't want it and you can have it for free. I have an Irish plate which came with my car, it's 3 letters and 3 numbers. Doesn't spell anything out but it looks equal and doesn't give a date.
Out of curiosity I got it valued and they gave £800 after fees. That was once it sold. I chose to keep hold of it as a I quite like it still. That was on the regtransfers website, I think I just put the number in on thier website and they emailed me back a day or two later.

Valuing and selling them are two different things, I've seen some listed on the usual sites for years.
It's like when people sell a car for £1000 but the plate is "worth £900", they're never happy to keep the plate and take £100 lol.

Just to put that into perspective: Some years ago I had a registration number on retention which Reg Transfers valued at £5,000. After five years 'marketing' it (which amounted to nothing but listing on their website) the best offer they had come up with was £800! I eventually sold it through eBay for I think around £1200...

Number plate traders value high to tempt you to sign up with them, then you find the list price is much lower.
They just want as many plates on their books as loss I le to increase the chance of a sale.
Just because someone values your plate at X, doesn't mean you can sell it independently for that, or add that value into your car.

The plate is worthless until you get the car MOT'd and taxed as that is required to transfer / sell. Depends when it was last taxed - my plate was stuck on a car until the Tories changed the law a couple of years ago, allowing me to transfer the plate.

Back to the plot - something is only worth what someone is willing to pay. If i park my car in the right place, get it seen, i could be onto a winner. But it's just about the right person seeing it.
I was actually chased down once, and i've had quite a bit of interest. But so far i wouldn't let it go. I think the thing to do is advertise it for auction with a reserve, no fee if it doesn't sell. I believe there are actually registration auctions, but i know nothing about the trade at all.
