I have a migmate. Owned about 8-10 years but has'nt done a lot of work really. Its had the wire feed pipe changed as the original plastic one was curse word. Yesterday when tacking a bike frame together I heard a funny noise. Reached down with bare hand (curse word, I know) and moved the cables etc and it was hot. I was in the process of trying out a feed brace I made. When I opened the torch the switch wire was loose. Not burned, more frayed (from use?) Anyone know what happened?? I now need a new gas pipe and wire feed and switch wire. Can't really see from the blurry photos but somthing obviously shorted. Could be the switch feed or even the main weld current going to ground.
Perils of using crappy kit I guess.

Is it crappy?? It was about the best 'hobby' welder available when I bought it. Anyway it has to be fixed as I cant afford anything else.

Could the new brace have shorted to something livening it up when it shouldn't be?

Could the new brace have shorted to something livening it up when it shouldn't be? Cheers. It was the only change so I will start there looking for the short. Ordered new gas pipe. Very frustrating....

Unfortunately these SIP welders are poor quality, I have one as a compact thing to tuck into my garage (my decent one is in my workshop on my parents farm) and the build quality is very flimsy and there's a good reason why there's loads of modification threads online for them. That aside mine functions well (after the torch melted itself and I replaced it with a decent one!) and does a good enough job for most little welding jobs but certainly not ideal for a full on resto. When I move back near the farm I will keep this one as a gasless welder for emergency jobs when it's windy, at least until I get an inverter welder.
The brace shouldn't cause a shorting issue however if the switch wire is loose then that is your likely culprit and either needs to be tweaked a bit with pliers or a replacement end fitted. Have you taken the panel off on the other side to check the wiring in there? Might be worth a look just to be safe.

The second photo shows evidence of a short . Looks like the insulation on the power feed wire to the gun has been abraded by the ribs of the metal wire feed pipe. I too have a SIP 130 T which I bought new over 20 years ago . Granted it wasn't used for 16 of them but in it's defense I spent two years restoring my E24 and it did a LOT of welding and gave me no problems at all and produced good strong welds with great penetration. There are much ,much better sets on the market nowadays but with a little care and maintenance it'll do the job.
