For sale is my BMW E30 which has had a full diesel conversion with the engine from an E34 525 TDS. It is a properly done conversion using genuine OEM e36 TDS engine mounts and an M3 propshaft. The original TDS gearbox and differential is also used so the engine has the correct gearing.
I bought the car with no MOT, it needed inner and outer rear arches, wings, doors, floorpans and battery tray work. Every single piece of rust was cut out and replaced with good metal, red oxide primered, 2K black painted and then sprayed with shutz to stop it coming back.
Mechanically the car is in excellent condition. At the time of the conversion, all the front suspension and bushes were replaced including the bottom arms. The car drives straight and is a pleasure to drive.
When the engine was out, it was treated to a full service and also all the injector pump seals replaced with brand new Bosch seals and Viton seals for the two seals which are renowned for leaking on these engines. The clutch was also replaced with a brand new one, and all the engine and mechanical fluids including gearbox and diff oil with BMW OEM approved oils.
The interior is in good condition except for the driver’s seat, it has a good condition un-cracked dashboard (rare!), electric windows and original tape cassette player. The driver’s seat has some wear, but can be picked up fairly cheap. All the gauges work as they should, including the mpg gauge which sits between 40 and 50mpg on a motorway run!
Cosmetically, the car was left unpainted, I appreciate the rat-look patina and a scruffy daily, but I fully understand this would not be to all buyer’s taste. The new panels including the brand new welded in rear arches were red oxide primered, 2K primered and then just sprayed with 2K black. If it doesn’t sell, I’ll be sending the car off for a full original colour respray and will replace the driver’s seat so it appeals to more people.
I also recently fitted a removable tow bar which is included in the sale, I have a retro 1970s small caravan which we use the E30 to tow, hence needing the diesel conversion in the first place. The 525 TDS is a very good engine, and I’m always surprised they never left the BMW factory with this engine in place. It’s a good strong workhorse, and if we hadn’t just bought a 1 series we wouldn’t be selling it. It’s an extremely reliable engine and a very good conversion.
THE BAD BITS:
Please be aware before bidding of the scruffy paintwork, the interior light does not work and it has a scruffy welded up passenger door. It would benefit from a second-hand door, although the current door is rust free, but welded and then poorly fillered!
Any inspection welcome, I'm in Bingley, West Yorkshire.
SORRY NO SWAPS - I already have a new daily. Thank you.
