hi i keep looking at a zetec conversion for my hillman minx but trawling through the internet just leaves me confused. will it be possible to use an engine from a focus? i realise i will have to use some of the loom and ecu but how much do i need? is it possible to unpick the engine part of the loom from the focus, i'll need the key and pats sender for eg.
thanks
p.s i know i can just buy all the bits from specilists but was hoping to do it reasonably cheaply.....ie for around £400

IME while it can be done for £400 it will require:
-alot of fabrication from your end -searching to get things very cheaply - Zetecs are not as cheap as they once were -Preparing to put up with a couple of niggles.
IIRC picking the loom apart is not that tricky but time consuming.
Your biggest headache will be sorting out things like the clutch, bellhousing (Have you seen the price of Type 9s lately), changing the water rail around so that it is in the 'right' place for a RWD car amongst other things. You'll also need another sump and to modify it to fit your car depending on how the crossmember sits. If you plan to track the car you may want to consider baffling the sump as well, as the early Escort sumps (a popular choice for RWD cars) are unbaffled from the factory.
What engine is in the car at the moment? I'm not being funny but some cars can have £150+ thrown at them at a service in parts alone (cambelt kit, oil, filter, plugs etc.).

thanks, good to know about unpicking, basically i have a choice of 2... buy a engine/loom/ecu off ebay and hope i get all the bits or buy a running focus(preferred)
already got a spare type 9 gearbox although just to be different i may go automatic.
fabrication wise thats not a problem i can sort most things out but the electrics are a minefield to me in so much as what works with what, unpicking a standard loom would be ok but wiring an aftermarket ecu would leave me lost....
the other option would be a complete set up from a mx5.
currently the minx is running a standard 1.5 with overdrive box.

A cheap way around things could be to get a Weber 38DGAS, get the banger racing manifold conversion and run the Zetec on a Wasted spark unit. But the ECU for the wasted spark part would probably eat alot of your budget.

I think I would go for an MX5 lump with the gearbox. No clutch issues, plenty about for not much money & very compact.

Bryan Worth noting that this is the Yamaha-designed 'Sigma' engine and not the ford-designed Zetec which most conversions refer to. *n

if you have a bit of a budget look into a nodiz unit to run the spark, its a good little unit plug and play with a map suited to zetecs on bike carbs or weber carbs be it twins or twin chokes... very good unit no messing around.
sumps you can use a retro ford item or arrow engineering do a good alloy one I believe. cvh ones are prone to leaking and usually cost a lot due to "zetec scene tax" so I would say avoid unless its dirt cheap.
water rail depending on how much room you have got can be easily made. or again theres some well priced ones out there I think ike engineering do a neat alloy one. in an ideal world you want to run the water rail along the drivers side of the engine as most of the Rf or raceline ones run along side the exhaust and do tend to get hot (hindsight I wish I bought one that ran on the inlet side ..makes sense. ho hum!)
