Having sold all the barn find mopeds and motorbikes (except for the Panther Model 70 for another project) I find myself with some unattributable cash that is not budgeted for the Goddess or SpridJET so the next purchase is a lift for the garage bay of the Volcano Lair. We have both single and three phase and the largest thing I can envisage lifting is SWMBO's Defender. Would one go in as the garage bay is quite narrow (see pic). Any help/advice gratefully received. Cheers, Ian

anything branded, so you can still get spares!
single motor twin screw types with a chain are simpler, more compact, i have access to a twin motor maha screw type belt driven, its a bit of a faff as it has bits missing but it is a 3 ton unit and doesnt complain when you put an l322 rangerover on it.
ladder chassis stuff like landrover series or defenders are a bit sketchy on them however

I'd er towards 3ton minimum. I know our little one that's rated at 2ton (iirc maybe even 2.5t) will sometimes struggle to lift heavy cars that probably only actually weigh 1200kg or so.

I bought 4 old Bradbury lifts from a bt garage that was having new ones installed 7 years ago they were built mid eighties and have separate screw drive motors so no bump in the floor to deal with or drive over . Only issue is nut wear and they are £70 and a couple of hours to replace . Everything else has been trouble free .
Phone a few garage equiptment firms as they often sub out the installation and the installers sometimes take the old unit away on a trailer .

a 4 poster may actually be a better bet. my stenhoj 3 tonner is the same width between the pillars at the bradbury 2 post next door, but the pillars are much narrower so isnt actually as wide overall.
its also a lot more 'solid' to work on and much more versatile, as you have the option of lifting the car with the wheels in driving position, then lifting them off the bed after using a jacking beam, which is handy for tracing the type of problems that disappear as the wheels drop away as the car is listed on a 2 poster. its also much better for low cars.

Hi, You say the garage is narrow, have you got space to get past the posts (two or four) with a car in place.

Had my automech 2 post 2.5ton single phase about 4 more the now. Been great. Paid £700 6 more than old. They aren't mega money new. Hence why I looked at them instead of paying similar money for a 20 year old bradbury. Yes can get parts for them but way up how much you are going to be using it.
