This lovely example of the classic Mk 4 Escort XR3i Cabriolet was first registered May 1990. Back then Adamski was top of the charts with ‘Killer’, Margaret Thatcher was in her final few months as Prime Minister and an XR3i was the car to be seen in.
This one is something of a time-warp car, and has been lovingly looked after for the past 26 years.
Every owner has carefully kept the incredible history of this car up to date in a bound folder which contains copies of the original log book (and the current V5 of course), every single MOT certificate from the first one in 1993 when the car was 3 years old, right up to the most recent, issued in April 2016. Included in the folder is the original bill of sale from Solomons Ford in Camberley and invoices for practically every bit of work done on the car and any parts bought for it. There are invoices for all the services and a fully stamped service book detailing 20 main dealer services.
The car has covered just 91,000 miles – which is verified by the service history, invoices and all the old MOT certificates. The car has never been stored (it isn’t necessarily a good thing to store a car long term unless you prepare it and re-commission it properly as they like to be used) and has been MOT’d, used and maintained every year.
The last owner had the car for 19 years and it was garaged every night, which is probably why it is in such great shape still.
This is one of the last of the Mk 4’s, so has the 1600 EFi engine and 5 speed gearbox.
It has never been ‘boy-racer’ owned and has remained standard, with the exception of the bonnet, which the Ford aficionados among you will know is from an Escort RS Turbo (the XR3i bonnet didn’t have the 2 vents in the bonnet). It’s a very subtle modification and easily reversed if you wanted to go back to a totally standard car.
The bodywork is in lovely condition and is the original paint, so obviously there are a few minor marks if you look closely as this is a 26 year old car which has always been used. I had the bumpers re-painted after I bought the car as there were parking type scrapes on the corners.
The car came with a second hand RS Turbo body kit which I’ll include in the sale. I chose not to fit it as I like my cars to look original, but I’ll include it in the sale if the new owner wants to fit it.
This XR3i drives very nicely and starts on the button. The car has an aftermarket but period correct stereo radio cassette but to be honest it’s a bit rubbish. I’ve been looking out for an original Ford radio cassette to put back in it and they come up on eBay quite regularly and quite cheaply.
The hood is in good condition and is leak free. The later XR3i’s also had heated front and rear windows which is a handy thing to have (anyone who has owned a convertible in winter will vouch for that!).
The exhaust is relatively new and the tyres are all good. The foam in the seat bolsters is a bit flat (a common thing with old Fords) and the front seats have come unstitched slightly but they are still pretty presentable. If I was keeping the car I’d probably look to get them re-furbished at some time.
The sun has caused the grey plastic interior door handles to fade a bit over the years but that’s just me being picky.
It’s got 3 seat belts in the back so ideal for taking the kids out. This Escort would be equally ideal as a cheap starter classic, a daily driver soft top for summer or a great base for preparing a show car for the future.
XR2 and XR3i prices are rising fast (just take a look at the crazy price of Mk1 and M2 Escorts!). This is a great opportunity to grab a classic car in decent condition that you can just use straight away for a sensible price.
I’m only selling the car as a VW Camper I owned a few years ago is for sale again, and I really want to buy it back but don’t have enough space on the drive for both vehicles, so sadly the XR3i needs to go (typically just as Summer finally seems to be arriving!).
If you are still reading then thanks for sticking with me so far!
A quick reminder of the main points – 1990 Escort XR3i Cabriolet, 91k miles, MOT to April 2017, incredible service history.
Asking price is £2150 ono and I’m in Woking, Surrey.
