Chap in work was telling me he has a 1988 E reg Orion Ghia white that's been sat in his garage for the last 10 years. Its done 70 odd k and says its in good nick. But trying to get a price out of him is like getting blood out of stone but i think he,s looking for around £500 i was thinking £300.
Any thoughts is it worth buying or are they over shadowed by the xr3. Theres non on ebay atm.

Without a doubt it's worth buying if it's half decent

Give him £500. If the car is in good nick, it will be worth far more than that once you get it going again. Whats not to like:

The Orion is probably one the most boring & uninspired offerings from a mediocre car manufacturer in one of it's least salubrious eras. I bought one once for a £10, (just because it was a running MOT'd car for a £10).
Overshadowed by the XR3? They're not really the same market but, yes XR3's have always held their value.
Because they were not a fantastic car & comparatively unloved they're getting rarer. Prices have picked up and so, ironically, has interest in this particularly uninteresting car.
It's good that it's been garaged, (why was it laid up in the first place?) If it's sound, running & looks as though it will go through an MOT without needing a fortune spent it should be a fair buy if it can be had in the £300 - £500 price range depending on how much scrubbing up it needs.

He parked it up when he bought a mondeo diesel for work. I can remember 15+ years ago every man and his dog had one but haven't seen one for years. Looked on completed items on ebay to and nothing came up. Think i,l try and have a look at it tomorrow.

I had an E reg one back in 88 brand new, it was the burgundy one, great car. Just an XR3 with 4 doors & a boot, I had a one yr old son at the time, so was perfect. I'd have one today no bother

I drove past a metalic burgandy one yesterday, i could hear the tappets from 50 yards away good old CVH Mind you it's pagent weekend so the roads are full off old clunkers No idea what they are worth nowdays though? broke hundreds of them back in the day, check the fuse box area, floor/sill area and the chassis by the rear springs, they like to rot

Classifieds; Orion adsUnless it's in really clean condition, I think I'd rather be paying £300. And look at the prices - nothing like £300.... Well Lopez did YOU look at the prices or just one or two? Pricing cars is always difficult & subjective; some people have rotboxes which they think are worth their weight in gold & others have minters which they think are worth their weight in scrap. There are some people advertising Orions for absurd money here, (probably chancers / dealers), that doesn't mean there are people out there who will pay those absurd prices, although it only takes one chinless wonder with more money than sense. Most of the cars on the list I've sent are MOT'd, driving and in presentable condition, the cheapest MOT'd example is under £700, (which is a lot nearer to £300 than £3K). The cheapest without an MOT is £250, (which, coincidentally, does happen to be a Ghia!) Bababoom knows of this car which doesn't have an MOT, we can only assume when it was laid up that the condition was 'well used' as he hasn't seen it, it may be scruffy or even rotten. How much will it cost to get through another MOT? £50? £500? £1,500? Mileage is 70K+ that's pretty well into the engine's life expectancy. It's a Ghia, not all the cars on the site are Ghias So, you understand, it's not always going to be possible with rarer cars to pull up umpteen examples which directly correspond to the example you're trying to price up. It's difficult to guesstimate a value without photos & going by a limited description from someone who hasn't seen the car but I don't think he's going to find a mint Orion languishing under sheets, it's probably going to be a tired old banger which needs heavy recommissioning and quite a bit of money throwing at it. I personally wouldn't want to be spending much more than about £300 on it but I'm not a fan of Orions.

Had 3 of them over the years, a black, white and blue 1. All were brought for next to nothing in comparison to today's price's. Seat 5 comfortably, quicker than a 3i to 60 and cheaper to insure. I'd have another over a 5 door mk4 escort anyway.

My dad used to have one, I don't remember the specs because I was too young, perhaps 5 or 6 years old, it was black with a purple trim line round it and had a taz sticker in the rear window. I used to pretend it was one of the cars in this thing :

These were very prone to tin-worm due I believe to cheap spanish steel (or has my memory failed me?). All of the late 80's Orions down the scrap yard were rotten at the base of the 'C'-pillar where it met the rear arch. The car in question may have been stored in a garage but it would have seen enough use for the tin-worm to get started and the garage may have just incubated it. I had a car in my parents old garage that used to get very wet through condensation due to poor airflow through the garage so you may be disappointed with what you find. You could of course get lucky and find a tidy car hidden away but if so, get happy with the dinitrol!

I had a 1.6 Ghia in blue. Cheap, cheerful, easy to fix, comfy, well appointed (even had heated front screen) and in my opinion looked better than the 4 door escorts. At the time they had a premium over the escorts. Get it bought and put some photos up.. As for price, pay what you want if you like that car.
