Apart from rusting I reckon 90s cars the place to look. My MX-5 can happily be a daily. Despite having over 150k on the clock it still runs like a Swiss watch .

Both of you have valid points. JDM stuff appeals, Elgrand etc. Even a plus espace.
Additionally, 90's stuff appeals. I'm late 20's so 90's cars are what I grew up with, learnt in and dreamt of.
So 90's Volvo estates, Pug 405, e36's and so on. Even early Mondeo and certain vans.
Saw an immaculate late 70's/early 80's hiace tonight, lovely.

Did you buy something? Here is another tip: Subaru Legacy Station. Go for the larger engined 2.2 GX. I had one, first gen (90-94, the best) and loved it. Then on a bad day loaned it out to someone and he managed to total it on the motorway. Which was a pity because I got it from the first owner and it had low miles, I had plans to keep it for much much longer. Was still on the first exhaust after 21 years. Had it for 4 years and it only needed front UJs. Am sorry I did not keep the damaged car for parts as they are now pretty rare, I have not found another one in decent shape. Although there is one for sale now but it is a 3 hours drive and he wants a bit much. Still....
If you want cheap go for the 2nd or 3rd generation. They are reliable, very roomy, have a very nice boxer engine, the AWD is useful and they are a bit different to the too common 405/406/Mondeo/Volvo etc.
I had planned to keep the Leggy as the modern car in our household. Modern because it had everything - heated seats, AC, etc etc. I use classics for most of the driving but my wife and daughter need a bit more modern. Now have a BX GTi as a modern car, again a fantastic car. Although I would happily trade it for a Gen 1 Legacy estate!

My daily is a 1997 Mercedes w202 250 turbodisel I bought it over six years ago for £1100 we've been everywhere in it with no problems , my wife used it as her daily for two years , until she bought herself a modern fiesta thing,,,I sold my E class and now use the w202 everyday, she's still in superb condition with full service history,,I would never sell it , by far the best car I've owned And that includes the modern fords and rovers I lost a fortune in depreciation on

I was wondering the same thing a while back. I decided that there is no particular reason NOT to own a retro as a daily driver. In the past I've had an Opel Vectra ('94), Kadett D ('80), Omega A ('91) as daily drivers and had no particular problems with them whatsoever. Then the girlfriend decided I needed to "modernise" and a Omega B ('00) was bought. This car was a disaster, VERY nice while it worked, but I always suspected this thing was built by Alfa Romeo... on a monday morning... by the janitor... A second attempt was made with a Saab 9-5, but again, too modern for me. Although this was a nice car, I never really liked it the way I liked past retro's.
So I bought a E28 two weeks ago and I couldn't be happier about it! It's wonderful to have the retro feel again! To me it's simple, don't try to buy cheap, as these cars WILL have problems sooner rather than later. Try to find a car that's well looked after and be prepared to pay a little bit more, this will no doubt pay back later!
