Hello all,
Was wondering if anyone knew what the cheapest way of getting lead additive was at the moment? I use my van (Renault Express - 1.4 C1J engine) as an every day run around so I go through quite a lot of it but the petrol station prices seemed to have gone up a lot in the last year.
I've always used Redex - a 250ml bottle will do 250l of petrol. You can currently buy them in packs of 4 on ebay for £18 (£4.50 a bottle) or strangely, packs of 6 from the same company that comes to £4.80 a bottle.
Does anyone know of a cheaper source than that?

What about using 100ll aviation fuel (£1.60ish a litre locally) it contains up to 0.56 g/litre of lead in Avgas 100LL, the leaded petrol on sale today is 0.15 grams per litre so you wouldn't need much to keep a good level of protection, as you are using it as an additive rather than a fuel there shouldn't be any issue with the duty on it.

Also get 10+ man points for saying your car runs on 'avgas' too !!

Very interesting. I like the sound of that. Is 0.15g per litre a suitable target or is that the modern compromise?

That said, with the figures you've given:
AVGAS - You would need 1 litre to every 4 litres of regular unleaded which would cost £1.60 + (£1.07 x 4) = £5.88 / 5 = £1.18 per litre
Additive - £4.80 for 250 litres of fuel so £4.80 + (250 x £1.07) / 250 = £1.09 per litre
So additive is still marginally cheaper and a bit less faff, but then again, it is worth considerably less man points than avgas.

It should boost the octane rating slightly too. I have a feeling our local airfield isn't the cheapest place either as there was refueling going on with Jerry cans of their own fuel rather than buying it at the field...

Cool - can you just drive into an airfield and buy aviation fuel? If so I've got to try that just for the points.

Most places will, obviously it needs to go into a jerry can as it's not for road use. Race track/ drag strip is fine though

I've been using castrol valvemaster for years. Seems to work and cost effective.

Valvemaster has worked for me in the past.
I wouldn't rule out LPG valve saver solutions either, especially the electronic ones. LPG wears even 'unleaded friendly' valves in some cases!
