I've been offered a 323 with either worn guides/seals or rings. There's no point in fixing the engine and I know someone with an MX5 engine. Is this a possible swap? I know about the RWD problems, but does anyone with Mazda knowledge know any details? Thanks

I was reading a thread over on club323f and the general feeling was that you are better off using an engine from a 323 rather than mx5. The block isn't the issue, it's more that all the ancillaries are fwd and rwd specific as far as I could tell. The 1.5 16v is a sweet little motor. Very rev happy even though it is under-cammed. Some of the jdm 1.5s run around 110 bhp and most of the 20 bhp gain is from the cams! There are lots of cheap BA 323fs around, cheap enough to break, keep the engine and probably make your money back on bits
I would get over on club323f and see if anyone has a suitable engine. They seem a friendly enough bunch on there.

Not sure about there, but while less common than 1.6, fwd 1.8DOHC 323 aren't incredibly rare..

I wonder how viable it woulld be to use the 1.6 block and head from the mx5, and just retain the 1.5 running gear, i.e. the inlet, injection system and so on. I don't know the answer, but would be interested to know if anyone else does.

buy yourself a 1.6 gasket set and try them up against your current motor to see if the inlet/exhaust manifolds will fit. Spending £20 on gaskets that wont work is cheaper than £200 on an engine that wont fit I did similar when i was making an inlet manifold for my 1.8 engine with a bp4w head, but i printed the drawing out to scale and tried it for size before sending the drawing off to be cut out on steel.

One other thing that might be worth keeping in mind is that if you're planning to declare the change in engine size on the V5, you'll go from the below 1,549cc tax band of £145 per year to the over 1,549cc tax bracket of £235 per year.
