I have been meaning to update this, but wasn't parked in a location where I could take a comparison shot for a while, haha.
But first, some words.
I ordered all the bits and pieces to replace front and rear shocks, strut mounts, a new caliper repair kit as my newly refreshed caliper was leaking, two new rotors to replace my new wobbly ones, and a bunch of wheel bearings (only planned to do the fronts at this stage, tears are for down the track as needed).
I was planning to do all this over christmas, as well as weld up my wings and get started on getting Seedy all one colour again. Oh, and make a start on returning theto spare head.
Then it got to just before holidays and I found out Jono was going to Malaysia for two weeks. D:
Which threw a large spanner in the works.
No matter, I thinks, I can work on the head and start on the wings still. And when he gets back we'll do a day and smash out all the suspension and wheel bits.
Come holiday time and I motivate myself, only to find I can't get in to the workshop because I can't find my key!
Welding gear is there. Air gear is there (for porting, etc).
Bumhats.
So I say around twiddling my thumbs until Jono got back in the country so I could gain access.
Back in the country, he's straight back to work (poor guy, he really needed the holiday!)
So I only managed to pin him down to give me a hand last Friday, the last day of my actual holidays haha.
Ah well.
Get down the workshop, and I can't get the car up on stands and ready to go because someone needs to come in and use the gantry to remove something from the roof of their 4WD. A couple of hours and a lot of faffing around later, the box is off, and we EASILY lift it in to the back of the car, a sit only weighs maybe 30kg. -_-
Could have done it in the damn carpark!
Anyway. Finally get Seedy inside, wheels off, up on stands. Start the work.
So.. turns out that the front shocks I ordered are wrong, and the ones listed were for a CROWN of similar vintage.
Completely wrong compared to mine, I only know that they fit the CROWN because as I was kneeling on the ground I could see the front shocks of the similar vintage CROWN bash car, 3m away. So, at least they'll get used I guess. But now I have to order another set of shocks from the states. No point returning them because shipping would cost as much as the shocks did.
Well, it's half apart now. So strut mounts swapped. Cut a coil off each side and all back together. Checked the caliper, and sure enough, one of the seals had pinched going back together, so replace those.
Didn't have enough time to do the rotors and bearings so, will leave that till I have correct shocks and it all comes apart again.
On the rear at least all went well. Also cut a coil off each side.
The rear has flat ended springs, but there is so much locating cone that even at full drop the springs are still located and no chance of coming off unless something very untoward happens.
I am not really a big fan of chopped springs, but it gives me an idea of what it'll be like with the correct setup.
Rebled the, brakes, overtightened the rear drum (turns out they're not quite round, and it was free for 80% of wheel spin and jammed tight for the last 20%. So this might be the cause of my shudder? As the shoes are wearing out in that particular spot the shudder appears to be less, but could be coincidental).
Eventually got it back on the ground.
Done for the night. Decided to remove my toolbox and bits and pieces from the rear as it was reaaally raked.
And now, the moment you've been waiting for..
Then
Now
I think the front could probably do with another half a coil, I will see how it sits when I get the shocks.
Cheers,
Matt
